Music Hall 25.2 !?
« on: 18 Aug 2012, 12:53 am »
I just need someone's informed opinion on this. My low-mileage, but out of warranty, Music Hall CD 25.2 suddenly does not recognize any discs.

Is this unusual for the Music Hall 25.2 or is it a known problem? Is it worth fixing?

Any informed comments are appreciated. I'm out in the deep grass on this and don't know what to do with the thing.

I had a similar problem with an Onix xcd 88 unit which is supposed to me the same as the Music Hall although I don't know if it is the same as your model.  The tech guy "repaired" it for 200$.  The problem continued so I brought it back, like a year and a half ago.  He can't get the part.  I contacted  the online sales guys for Onix (member woofersus) who confirmed that the particular part was not available for my unit.  So if you do have it repaired inquire if parts are available before incurring any expenses.

I have since bought a usb dac and will probably never buy another cd player.

Good luck!

Thanks, django11,

I will take the unit apart. I might be able to see something, but if I can't I'll put it on the block for any reasonable offer. Maybe it will find a happy home.

The reason the unit has low mileage is because I went to computer audio a few years ago, right after I bought the cd player. I've been using jplay, not to be confused with jriver or whatever it is called. Anyhow, this software from Europe is a HUGE improvement in sound quality over typical computer audio players, such as WMP, iTunes and JRiver. If you don't know about it, you might want to check it out. It is Windows only.

Thanks again!

Thanks, giving JPLAY a listen.  I am not sure about the sound improvement yet.  The trial version is quite buggy on my system.  I can't get it to work right now ...

Just a reminder that the trial version does stop playing for a few seconds every few minutes.

Other than that, I found that they were very responsive to customer problems. That was some time ago when they were just getting started, so I don't know how they are now, but you could try contacting them.

Once I got their player set up correctly for my system, according to the instructions, I was pleased with the sound. Hope you are, too.

For what it's worth, before I scrapped my very low-mileage Music Hall CD 25.2 I thought I would open the hood and just look. Clean as a whistle. Not a speck of dust. I couldn't think of anything to do, so I took one final shot in the dark. I reseated all the digital connectors, popped in a disk and it recognized it and started playing. So, an old engineering principle, check your connections, paid off.

Great news!  How do you reseat all of the digital connections?  I have an older Music Hall cd25 and it skips if I don't use it for a month or so. It works fine after it plays for a few minutes but whenever it's started  old it has trouble reading some discs.

Thanks

J

Remove the cover and note that the screws on the sides are a different size than the screws on the back. After the cover is removed, just grasp the connecting plugs so they unlock from their bases and wiggle them up and off. Then, just push them back into position. There are about a dozen or so.

Note that the broad flat cable, the one that comes out from the side of the disk drive and feeds directly into the main board, does not have a locking plastic clip on it's end, tho it appears to. Just pull the cable upwards and it will pull free. Think of is like a speaker cable without terminations of any sort. Don't pull on the plastic body it goes into, but put your finger under the cable and pull it upwards. There is no locking mechanism. It's a friction fit.
