Adventures in REW and Mini DSP (with pics!)
« on: 10 Aug 2012, 02:56 am »
Thanks to sts9fan for lending me the gear and the experience to make a few measurements in my little downstairs listening space.  For this case, I used only one mic position just about where the center of my head would be.  I pointed it down and used the 90 degree narrow-band calibration.  I used twine to make sure the speakers were the same distance and angle from the mic.  I measured both channels at the same time first, and then each channel separately.  I had REW calculate a custom curve for each channel based on that channel's measurement up to 1000 Hz.  I specified to 3 dB of target.  I used offset for some of the curves to make them easier to see.
Top curve = both channels, no DSP
next one down in purple = both channels with DSP
next two down = left and right, no DSP
next two down = left and right with DSP

Before judging the curves as too bumpy, keep in mind that the scale and smoothing is somewhat unforgiving.  Each square is 5 dB and smoothing is 1/6.  Also, some of us get used to seeing response curves in anechoic conditions, and it almost never looks like that in a real room.  So, I think even the results before the Mini DSP is applied are fairly respectable.  No?    Well, anyway how does it sound comparatively?  Stay tuned, but I think I'm liking the NO DSP version better so far.  Too early to say.

Duh, forgot to add;   speakers: PSB Synchrony One,   amp Rotel RB-1582,  Benchmark DAC1 USB,  Blue Jeans 10 ga. speaker cable.

By notching out the peaks you've reduced the overall energy in the 120Hz down area. You may wish to experiment with a "tilting the overall curve" down and also a bit of a "target curve" as per this link - http://www.hifizine.com/2011/06/bass-integration-guide-part-1/ - although small speakers won't take too much of that.

Thanks JohnR.  I also have an ACI Titan Sub that I switched off for the sake of simplicity, and I have two more parametric EQs to mess with.  You know, I could see how measuring, tweaking, and playing with every possible variable could drive me bonkers.

It can get like that :D

The Bass Integration Guide that I linked provides some guidance and a framework that should help from wandering off into the weeds, even if you don't do all the recommendations.

Yep, but the results are well worth it IMO / IME.

It was all a scheme to get you to post in the lab and clean out my closet.
Seriously though my main concern is the fidelity of the MiniDSP. It's super fun but I am not sure I could live with it long term.
Your in a win win situation anyway. Those speakers sound amazing with no help.

I think I'm getting a little better at this.  It's been said before, and I think I'm proving to myself that EQ, at least with the miniDSP, should be on subwoofer duty only.  I have the sub right up to the back of the listening chair so I introduced a 2 meter delay.  I figure the psychoacoustic precedence effect will keep the illusion that the sound is coming from in front of me since the sound from the mains will arrive ever-so-slightly earlier.  The light green line is DSP on the sub plus mains, the blue line is mains only.  I'm still not sure which setup I like best.
