Cleaning Dusty PCB?
« on: 9 Aug 2012, 10:59 pm »
Hey!

Anyone know what is the best way to clean dusty PCB? What to use to clean it... water, Windex, Iso alcohol?

    What's best for this? Thanks.

Take care,

I would worry about products that have alcohol or ammonia in them.  Also some aggressive contact cleaners.  The boards will be OK but some of the plastic components could be attacked.

Hey!

I was thinking about alcohol that it would dry out the board and contact cleaner will leave residue and cause holding more dust after.

I don't know. I will I will go by a brush and use that to brush off the dust. If the dust is too thick maybe a damped towel with water should be OK.

There must be someone here with more experience on this?

The only "damage" I have personally seen when using isopropyl alcohol to clean plastics is to either dull the sheen and/or partially remove printing, depending on the quality of the printing.  Soaking plastic parts in alcohol is a different story, and could certainly do more damage depending on the plastic and duration of soak.

I just use compressed air.

I have never had any problem with plastic "drying out" after using a common hardware store contact cleaner spray. Most of these products state right on the label that they are alchohol based, quick drying, and safe to use on plastics. And, since they are from your local hardware store they are usually cheap enough that you can really unload on a filthy board to clean it up.

I have totally soaked (saturated) some older boards that were filthy with gunk and have never had a problem with dissolving any plastic. Not yet anyway. :thumb:

I wouldn't worry about it.

Another vote for compressed air in a can.
Unless you have a circuit board gunked up with tar from years of exposure to cigarette smoke I can't see the requirement for a liquid based wash job.
