Absolutely love Rush from their first album right up to about Signals, and they lose me after that. Got Vapor Trails, that's alright, but nowhere near the early stuff.
Heard some tell that Clockwork Angels is a "return to form" and a lot of allusions to 2112, being that this is a concept album with a lot more of a rock edge to it.
Count me dissappointed. I'm going to give it a few more listens, but my first go through impression was this is pretty soft rock, pretty par for the course modern Rush. Not even close to 2112. Not one song here grabbed me, none of the riffs or drum parts are especially metallic, and Geddy Lee doesn't snarl once, he sings in the way he has for years now, like an insistent, troubled woman pulling your sleeve.
The first two tracks are a bit tepid, but it gets you thinking, okay, this is really going to take off from here.. and it never really did.
If I'd known this going in, I wouldn't have bought it, but the reviews are all 4 stars, this album rocks, etc.
It seems to be well recorded and some of the basslines are especially zingy. But other than that.. I think I need to give it another chance.
I was kind of daydreaming a bit while listening, and I did click ahead through some of the songs, but that's the albums fault.
Your thoughts?
