Dialling in a sub with the Maggies optimally
« on: 6 Aug 2012, 07:55 pm »
Hi Folks,

This past weekend my MMGs were packed up while a new pair of 1.7s were setup in my HT/2-ch setup. A Butler 2250s is on the way to replace the Emotiva XPA-3 that is currently powering them.

I need help setting up the subwoofer with them correctly.

I have a single Rythmic F15 that is currently connected via LFE through my Onkyo 805 recvr. I hope to add another one in the future. Here are my specific questions?

1. Should the 1.7s be run full range or crossed over above 40/50Hz thru the Onkyo. Audyssey had them setup for a 100 xover after running the prog., which I know cant be right.
2. Should the sub be run full range, if the cross over is controlled thru the recvr?
3. Alternative should the sub be connected via high current input instead of LFE and use the controls on the F15 to dial it in, while running the 1.7s FR.

Also how do I find the best position to locate the speakers. They are currently 4 ft from the front wall and 2 ft  from the side walls. The listening position is 11ft away diagonally from wach speaker.
The back wall is another 8 ft behind the listening position. The room is currently untreated (but carpeted) but am in the process of adding treatments from GIK and have been talking to Bryan Pape regarding this.

Thanks!

Use option #3 and set them around 40 Hz.
Go tweeters outside and how far apart are they?
It sounds like you're in the ballpark all around to me.

As of now (with tweeter outside) they are 8.5' apart (inner edges).
Very slight toe in (about 15 degrees).
The image seems very centered.
Currently running LFE in, running full range with crossover set on 50 on the sub and volume adjusted to slightly above Audessy settings.
Have been burning them in for about 60 hrs and counting.
The emotive amp isn't even warm to touch!!!

Here's an old picture which should give you an idea.
My 1.7s are upstairs which is a converted attic so it's an oddly shaped room.
They're about 6' out from the wall, as far apart as I can get them without hitting the cieling and having the sound shoot down the stairs.  The small NHT "sub" is run into a line in and set at 40 Hz with low volume.
It's kind of a poor man's DMW subsitute which I'll eventually replace with a small REL.
The seating position is about 11' back but the camera lens makes it look like 100 yards.
I just do subs by ear and adjust them so they blend in but don't become obtrusive.
The amps are VTLs and the preamp is a Sonic Frontiers SFL-2 so there's not too much futzing around with any sort of home theater type adjustments as there aren't any.
As much as I don't want to it's time to go to work again.

I have 1.7s with a single Velodyne 15" servo sub along a side wall.  I run the sub out of a secondary output from my preamp and run the sub's controls independantly.  I have the cutoff set at about 50Hz. and I run the Maggies full range.  I really only wanted the sub to contribute when needed and of course not be aware of it as a separate driver.  I wanted the Maggies to do every last bit of bass they were capable of because what they give is supurb.

I also run the tweeters on the inside.  I much prefer this more focused center than with the tweeters out.  Just my preference.  I then separated the panels as far as they would go and still maintain that focused image.  Like you I have them about 4' out from the wall and toed in for the equilateral triangle sitting position.
