One of my audiophile friends has brought to my attention, this sale on ebay: -

http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-OF-30-ALTEC-LANSING-SPEAKERS-/160853262441?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25739a0069#ht_1083wt_1189

They all seem to be in good nick and are worth the price being presently bid for. Is anyone interested to organise a group buy? I'm in for a pair.

I'm surprised and utterly disappointed at the lack of response.

I can understand that no one wants to take an initiative but not to comment is what is what I find, well, perplexing.

I posted the same information on the Lansing Heritage site and go no responses!

I am wondering if this ad is legitimate.

What do you think?

"all speakers were in working order when removed"
sounds like the may have the probability of not working now.

Why in the world would you assume that?

Rajesh -

They are at roughly $200 a pair now and the auction may close for more.  Then someone has to pick them up and arrange to ship them to the various buyers.  by the time all is said and done the could easily top $400 a pair.  I would be interested in a pair at ~$50 to experiment with, so maybe that's the reason there are no responses.  I'm sure the lousy economy has some effect too.  Just my .02.

Let's see. Post at 04:37 in the morning, start complaining about no responses as 11:42 the same morning?  I probably check this site once a day, which is not a lot different from most people, I expect. Plus, there aren't that many people who would care about this anyway - these are PA speakers, certainly not prized for hi fi applications. I think you are expecting too much.

PA speakers?  Goes to show I know nothing about vintage drivers.  I'll keep my $50.

Jake, the lot sold for $9100, and that's with "two of them may be blown". I figure that's $325 each  :o

Holy Moly!!  For PA speakers?!?  Way, way, too rich for my shallow pockets.

Maybe someone is building a replica of Comiskey Park and wanted an authentic PA system for it.

You mean "Kaminski Field" as the most famous southsider refers to it as?   :icon_lol:

Did you see how perfect the original cones and classic hammertone green paint is in the ebay pics? The buyer will of course get his pair(s) for free after exporting the rest to Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, and France.

That color of green brings to mind the Altec-Lansing tweeters that we used to uh-aquire
from the VA Dept of Transportation(70's). They used them to trigger traffic signals. It was the same utilitarian Altec green, but weather-resistant.

Anyone remember those? O75's?
I could probably dig into the archives and find one or two and take pics.

And my Altec 511 Horns, which I would love to use in a monitor set-up were used in
a P.A. array in the U.S. Army in Germany.

I am wondering if this ad is legitimate.

What do you think?

It is, and the thing went to the final bid of 9100. I was part of a group that placed their final bid of 9000. We had decided not to go beyond that.

Your analysis of final cost appears accurate but from what I gather, they are worth they are worth much more than that.

Let's see. Post at 04:37 in the morning, start complaining about no responses as 11:42 the same morning?  I probably check this site once a day, which is not a lot different from most people, I expect.

Gee :green: Brett, two things; one I'm in India and not sure of time zones in US.  Only thing I know is that we are on opposite sides of the globe and it would be day there when it is night here:oops:

Two, I was anxious to organise a group buy somehow and be part of it and was getting restless as the end time of the sale was nearing.

there aren't that many people who would care about this anyway - these are PA speakers, certainly not prized for hi fi applications. I think you are expecting too much.

I guess so (at least on AC). But I do not agree with a part of your opinion that I've highlighted above. I listened to 15" Altec drivers in folded horn configuration working in tandem with Altec Compression horn drivers. They certainly did not sound like PA systems to me.

Though they have their limitations and cannot do justice to all genres of music, playing things like Jazz music they put the so called hifi systems to shame. You can have a look at the system here: http://www.hifivision.com/av-lounge/10272-alert-iaudio-chennai-weekend-11.html#post144840

Too bad Norman. Your assessment of their value appears spot on.

Forgot to mention the drivers in that setup. They area Altec Lansing 515B woofers and Altec Lansing 288-16G HF compression drivers. Rajiv who made those has explained them here: http://www.hifivision.com/av-lounge/10272-alert-iaudio-chennai-weekend-12.html#post144953

Here is the pic:
