Puppy Punting *See a Pic of the CULPRIT!!!!*
« on: 5 Aug 2012, 01:32 am »
So today I'm enjoying a nice lazy Saturday in bed...watching Captain America on my T1s and loving the sound. After the movie is over, I switch over to TuneIn radio on my Roku box and decide to doze a bit while listening to some music. Well, I have been helping a lady friend raise a new puppy...he just turned 16 weeks on Friday and he's very smart with lots of personality. Anyway, when I wake up, I go to take the T1s off my head and something seems odd...usually I sort of have to duck my head as I'm taking them off to avoid the cables getting stuck...but this time I didn't feel any cable. I looked at the headphones and sure enough, one entire side of the cable was chewed through completely. I was in total shock and could not believe it. These things were on my HEAD!!! I didn't realize that my lady friend had left his nylabone in the living room this morning, so he had nothing to chew on in the bed...and apparently some copper wire looked desirable to him. Being an animal lover - especially dogs - I looked at him with a heavy heart and just said, "Tedddddddddddyyyyyyy, what did you DOOOOOOO???"  He looked up at me with puppy dog eyes and put his head down in shame on my leg...so, he's off the hook.

But now I'm left with a dilemma...what to do about my headphones? Should I send them back to Beyerdynamic for repair? I can't imagine this would qualify as a warranty repair, so I'd have to pay out of pocket Im sure. Should I send them off to ALO or Moon audio, or some other cable specialist and recable with better quality? Should I punt Teddy across the parking lot?

Wow AJ, I was thinking that someone was foregoing Watt Puppies for good cans...
Puppy probably already got the message about your cables, and it seems that you have a good relationship with your lady, worth more than a cable...
Is it possible to DIY a fix shortening the existing cable? Is it possible to get a new cable from Beyerdynamic and install it yourself?  Good luck!

My daughter's pup ruined several of her cables but seems to have outgrown it, but I still don't make my good cables easy to get to...

Send Beyer an email, tell 'em what happened (I'm sure they've heard it before, although maybe not while being worn), get it fixed whether they charge you or not, (they may take heart), and get a less hi-end set for situations where you feel a snooze is a possibility.

I'm tempted to say Fido has good taste in headphones... Or that I've heard that T1s sound good but have a little too much "bite"... Or that just because dog food comes in cans, that doesn't mean cans ARE dog food  ... maybe too soon for humor

lol, not too soon for humor at all...how could I stay mad at this little guy anyway?   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJyeaxPgvEc&feature=plcp

Doug: Im going to follow suit and not make my better headphones/cables as accessible either lol. Email to BD sent...waiting to hear back.

Funny story...this one guy on headfi sent me a PM suggesting I contact Robert at www.aphroditecu29.com, so I did. He was checking email tonight so I asked for a recommendation and a quote for a recable. He sent one back, to which I then asked if he had any interest in discounting a package deal if I picked up some Grado RS-2s, as well. He wrote back and said he intentionally steers his customers away from Grados since they aren't any good...this was the wrong answer for a Grado lover like myself  :duh:

Cute dog! If that guy thinks Grados are no good I don't know if I would trust his judgement in cables either...

He really is an amazing dog...couldn't ask for a better pup :)

So I'm pretty much decided on going with Drew at Moon Audio for the cable issue. As it turns out, he's an authorized by Beyerdynamic for recabling, and the warranty will stay intact even if I go with his Black Dragon aftermarket cable. I asked him for some quote and basically I have two choices: First, for about $95 I can simply have another stock T1 cable installed and return the phone to stock condition. If I want to try a cable upgrade and go with his well-regarded Black Dragon cable, an 8' run will cost me just under three bills. That's expensive, but it's less than any other quote I've received for aftermarket cables (those that have been suggested to me, that is).

So I"m tempted to just go with the stock cable, especially since I'm not really a big believer in cables having significant impact on the sound. But at the same time I haven't ever tried an aftermarket cable with headphones, and even though I'm doubting I'd notice any difference I'm also a bit curious about it. Another factor is that someone I trust quite a bit, Jan Meier of Meier Audio, recommended Moon Audio even without me telling him I was considering an aftermarket cable. I had only asked him about the warranty on the T1s since he's who I bought them from originally. So the fact that Moon Audio has his stamp of approval does carry some weight with me. He stated that even though it's pricey, the cable is of excellent quality and durability and a nice pairing with the T1s.

So what would you guys do?

Get an after market cable - the stock cable holds back on almost all headphones ... stax is the only exception that comes to my mind ...

Later you can thank the dog for this forced opportunity ;-)

I think I'm definitely leaning that way...if I don't notice any difference sonically, at least the cables will look really cool

LOL, that's so funny you posted that...on my Buffalo Bills message board they started a thread about that...that's exactly why I took this pic, I just planned to do a test run....never thought the test run would come out so perfect! I need to add his little speech to it though

"I chewed my daddy's $1200 headphones while he was asleep...
...I just wanted some attention...SUE ME!"

I have a couple other ideas I'll have to run by you to see what you think before I post it....going to try to get a laugh :)

Thats a riot zepp!!!!! The dog, as said  before, did you a favor even though its gonna cost you.

Let me know who you use, I started looking for cables once and everything was like $400 or more....aahhhh, I'm sure you'll find some priced much lower that perform as well. The guy that sells headphones probably never even tried Grado's. He sounds like the guy who doesn't trust his ears with anything...... :nono:

A guy at Beyerdynamic actually went to bat for me and go this repair approved under warranty....so I was pretty happy about that. Apparently people are reporting turnaround times over over 2 months, though, so just gotta figure out if I want to be w/out them for that long or just go ahead and try the aftermarket cable. I'll prob decide by Monday or Tues. Either way, I thought that was very cool of Beyer to do for me...excellent customer service.
