I have a Rogue 90 Amplifier that has mostly new tubes inside.  The amp looks excellent both inside and out.  It can use the KT120 tube to make about 90+ watts, or can be used with a few different output tube types.

This amp is nearly $3K, but I am letting it go for a quick sale at only $1250.

Shipping+Paypal fees extra.

I have a ton of positive feedback on a ton of different forums.

Nice grab!  I had this amp and loved it.  It is very responsive to tube rolling.  I found the stock tubes to sound way too mushy and loose for my taste.  However, after trying some different tube combinations it was transformed into sounding Sublime!  This amp also won The Absolute Sound awards.

Would love to hear what tube combos you and other Stereo 90 owners have liked. I think I will eventually upgrade to some KT120s.

And we will see how this amp compares to my Butler 2250 with my VonSchweikert VR-4s. Stay tuned!

I'd like to know the sound difference also;).  I've wanted to try out a Butler for a while now, but have been a little hesitant.  KT120's will be a very nice boost to the amp's capabilities and they are cheap enough.

I auditioned a pair of Butler 2250 (run in mono) in my system for awhile.  Having all that incredible power on hand, I was expecting off the charts dynamics and slam, and iron-fisted control.  But I found the bass overblown -- not tight but rather soft, mushy, and billowy -- and the overall sound to have a greyish character to it.

Given all the glowing press, I was expecting much more.  I found the Butler to be nothing special at all -- rather pedestrian, actually.

I currently use Rogue Atlas Magnum (w Kt120 tubes) and IMO it is much better.

Speakers are Sunny H2w10.

FYI, I recently talked with Rogue about KT120s in a Stereo 90.  They said they have to be specially selected to fit inside the chassis.  Apparently, there are some variations in the size of the glass so they barely fit.  This means you'll need to get those tubes from Rogue.  Don't worry.  Rogue doesn't inflate the price of their tubes like most other manufacturers.

Thanks for the help folks. The Butler was bought to pair with my SP Tech Minis, which really like power to shine their best (and the combo had been one used at audio shows).

But now that I have the 91dB efficient Von Schweikert VR-4s it occurred to me that I could more easily try (and afford) to go all tube. And I am especially relieved about the Rogue's reputation for dynamics, impact and bass.

We will see how it works out in my system. As we all know synergy is everything between amp and speaker.

Won't know if gears will mesh until you try it, but I'm confident that with 91 db spkrs the Rogue will give plenty of slam, heft, impact and control.

My Atlas Magnum gives all of that w/o breaking a sweat and my speakers are 92db.  They are not hard to drive but I have learned that the 10" woofers require some authority and grunt to strut to capabilities.

And member Rob / rpf uses his Cronus Magnum on 87db speakers that really like power.  Having heard it many times I can attest it is a good match.

Have fun.  Having lived with both amps it's hard to imagine you'd prefer Butler.  But as you say, it's all in the synergy.

The tube combo that I liked the best was:  Tung-sol 6550's NOS, Sylvania 6SN7GTB NOS, and RCA 12AX7 NOS.  I liked this combo because it really balanced out the amp.  The stock tubes sounded waaaaay too "tubey" for me.  It's possible to have too much of a good thing.  This combo of nos tubes brought more detail, clarity and made the bass sound more realistic instead of flabby and bloated.

Have fun tube rolling.  I found that it took time, energy and money to try different tubes to find the right combo.  When you hit the right combo that synergizes with your gear, it is Jackpot!

I have tried many power tube types in my Atlas Magnum.  There are others that escape my memory, but among them are:

NOS GE 6550
various el34
Shuguang Black Treasure 6ca7
GL reissue KT88
Shuguang KT88
EH KT 90
Tung-Sol KT120   <---  my fave
GL reissue Kt66    <---  2nd fave

In general, on the right speakers, I tend to prefer the el34 sound.  But my current spkrs need some torque to really shine.  So with this amp I tended to prefer the tubes that provided a bit more power.  To my ear, the KT120 are the best by a fair margin.  I also really liked the GL Kt66 -- great tone, palpability, liquidity and musicality -- slightly less impact and slam than the 120's.  On a different / smaller spkr this could easily be my tube of choice.  The stock KT90 were just blah -- kindof greyish and uninteresting sounding.  No "pull".  The GL 88's were VG, similar sonic picture to the 120's, just a tad less.  The NOS GE 6550s, which were fantastic in other amp / speaker combos, had bass that was simply MIA in my setup.

I have never heard the Atlas Magnum as too "toobey" with any of these tubes.  But remember, this is a different circuit than the 90, so your results / preferences w the 90 may differ.

Thanks for the suggestions. Looking forward to the amp's arrival. My finger is already twitching to flip the triode/ultralinear switch.
