I'm looking for a new cartridge for my TT.  I am only interested in moving coil.  Would increasing the gain be the only thing I need to do to get into the lower output cartridges?  If so, what's optimal for sound purposes? (low output, high gain or high output med/low gain)

Would it be better to stick with a high output coil?  I'm looking for a cross reference of db to mv:  What's the mv output I should look for, 40, 50, 60?

Then, how do I change the gain?  (I didn't assemble the board myself)

Also, Jim mentions something about the batteries lasting 16 hours with the 'highest grade' op amps.  What are the highest grade?

Thanks,
Carl

Carl,

You can use the Bugle with any cart you decide on.  I recommend setting gain to the minimum you can get away with (depends on your linestage).  The Bugle does not have huge headroom capability - that's one of the drawbacks to a passive EQ.  But hey, it sounds better.

For a typical 5mV cart, use the 40dB.  For a 1mV+, use 50dB, and 0.5mV and below go with the 60dB.

To change gain, follow calculations on this page:

http://www.hagtech.com/equalization.html

1.3k = 40dB, 680 = 50dB, 390 = 60dB.

The OPA2134 stock opamps for the Bugle are considered the premium variety.  If you desire higher battery life and can sacrifice some SNR (noise), then use the OPA2137.

jh :)

Thanks, Jim... exactly what I was looking for... I've got a power supply that I haven't put into a case yet so, I'm not too worried about battery life.. I just wanted to see if there were better opamps than what I had.
Thanks again,
Carl
