Megawoofer differences?
« on: 2 Jun 2004, 03:09 pm »
I was scanning the new price list (thanks a ton, John!) when I noticed the carbon fiber Megawoofer pricing...

1 6.5 inch Megawoofer = $70
2 6.5 inch Megawoofers = $140 (2 x $70)
4 6.5 inch RM30 Megawoofers = $380 (4 x $95)

So what is different about the 6.5 inch Megawoofers for the RM30's that makes them more expensive?

Thanks!

They're probably faster and tighter sounding (ie. more accurate) due to larger magnetic structure and/or stiffer cones.

Ed, go to the head of the class!

The RM30 Megawoofers were engineered specifically for that system.

We start by importing custom WCF/rubber cone stock (cones from Japan, natural rubber surrounds from Taiwan).  We use an 1.5"VC with a four-layer overhung voicecoil for twice the power handling.  A 30oz magnet is attached to a heavily bumped backplate so the VC cannot bottom out regardless of load. Misco (Minneapolis Speaker) assembles for us and consulted on the design. It turned out very well.

The whole driver took 7 months from start to finish.

Thanks for the clarification!

So now the natural follow-up question.... is there something that would preclude you from using the RM30 specific megawoofer in other systems that accept a 6.5 inch Megawoofer (626)?  I'm guessing that you might want to adjust pots, etc. differently for the RM30 based Megawoofer, but it sounds like there wouldn't be any sort of required crossover changes, etc..

The new driver goes into the 626R and LRC as soon as the crossovers have been adjusted.

Big B.
Can we buy raw drivers for DIY? :)

I have a 626R with carbon fiber  woofer.
What would be the difference in sound with the new megawoofer?
Thanks,

Does the 626R get a 6.5" slot-loaded PR for adjustable bass damping as well?

The 626 is a ported system and works well as such.  No plans for a PR version.

The Megawoofer in the current 626R is very good.  I would only replace if you're having trouble with the old MW bottoming out on loud deep material.

It sure is.  I am always amazed at the bass quality of my 626.

Here is an interesting reading about Brian's design:

The price list is incorrect, sorry Brian did not answer your question.  The new WCF 6.5" MW is $380/four, or $95ea optional upgrade on RM30, but as B said will soon be standard ONLY in 626R & LRC.

Also, not to contradict the guy who moderates this hear forum, mister big himself, but I assume an advantage when the 626R & LRC XOs are updated is that the XO will move up from the current 166Hz to 280Hz same as the RM30.
