Perhaps his finest vocal work since Frank's Wild Years.

I'm pretty sure it will be a small tour...at least to Larry Taylor who is a friend of mine and is in Waits band.

Tom, what a silly boy he is... giving us a new video of old jump rope rhymes.

I do think 'Frank's Wild Years' was his masterpiece. Up to then his 'weirdness' was totally in the service of his rather demented artistic vision. Since then seems  it's weirdness just for weirdness' sake. Sure there's been moments of brilliance (anyone need a Chocolate Jesus?), but I've grown a little weary of his recent releases.

Just my opinion...

No, sorry, Frank's Wild Years (the album) was a disjointed mess, the song, from Swordfishtrombones, is a classic.  His best album by far was "Small Change" released in 1976.  The best of his later works is "Mule Variations".

Hi,

I haven't listened to any of his music and I thought I might buy one.  Is any of his music well recorded and if so can you recommend one to try?

Thanks Rod

I just listened to Mule Variations the other day and it is very well recorded.

I used to really like Bone Machine but do not own it any longer, so cant comment on its sonics.

Hi,

I'm a massive Tom W fan.  I'd say start with Swordfishtrombones, Blue Valentine and Small Change.  Mule Variations is the best of the newer albums.  They are all well recorded, my personal fave is Blue Valentine.

Cheers,

JB

I just realized that Waits is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now there's no doubt he belongs in a Hall of Fame, but Rock and Roll?

Try "Beautiful Maladies".  It is well recorded and is his best from Island Records.
It's a good place to start.  I own all of his cd's and go to this one often.

You seem to have the facts... all I have is opinions.

A disjointed mess? Just like the fictional Frank's life. Maybe that's why it works (for me). Maybe Frank wasn't so fictional, iirc both Tom's father and grandfather were named 'Frank'.

It's rare I'll state that I have a favorite song by an artist. In this case it's Kentucky Ave. I was recovering from a motorcycle accident when the Blue Valentine album came out... didn't know if I'd be handicapped for the rest of my life.

Kentucky Ave's one of the reasons why it's my favourite of his albums.

I find with each song he's really found the secret of the provocatuer and connected with it and relates it.

Hooker from Minneapolis is another.  It's a borderline 'comedic' song, but he finds the tragedy in it, and relates it without mockery.

I suspect he hates the album now, coming as it did from his personal nadir before the change, but I love it.
