Depends on the player.
Firmware upgrades, streaming using Netflix, Pandora, etc.

Depends on what's on your blu-ray.
My Oppo streams Netflix, Pandora and Vudu. I can also stream using DLNA.

My Panasonic blu-ray player streams numerous paid video sites as well as YouTube.  It links to YouTube and displays most of my favorites.  Some don't display and when I research them I get a message something like "not authorized for mobile devices"  How they determine a blu-ray player and wall-mounted widescreen are portable defies logic.

I ran a dedicated CAT5e cable.  The internet is also used for firmware updates.

Not on my Panasonic DMP-BDT210.  In fact navigating YouTube is even awkward. You would not want to do too much searching using it.  I create my "favorites" list using my desktop and only use the Panasonic to choose from that list.

Thank you for the responses.

It also gives you the ability to control the unit via a smart phone, tablet etc....
