Hi,

I briefly owned a SP-3 that I had acquired as a used piece of equipment.

Immediatelly on plugging in the unit, I noticed a whistling from the unit. As it turned out, it was the display, making a whistling sound, whenever there was any content on the display. Turning the display off, the sound was reliably gone. When the display was on, I noticed the noise from 2m (6 feet) distance from the unit, easily in a quiet room, but also when listeing at lower levels, like late night listening @ -55dB.

In the end, I returned the unit for a full refund, as I was under the impression that the unit had a defect and I didn't want to go through the hassles of having it fixed on a just acquired unit.

After having returned it, I contacted the reviewer that posted the German video review on the SP-3 on youtube. He confirmd that his review unit and the demo unit he acquired both show the same behavior, i.e the display makes a noise. He also confirmed that his remark from the video review that the SP-3 sounded better with the display off, was referring to a) the display making noise itself and b) the display having an effect on the power supply. He also pointed out that the SP-3 still sounded way better than its immediate competitors, with the display on or off.

To find out whether I am overly sensitive to the display noise (like hearing ghosts...) or whether this might just be a standard "feature" of the SP-3 and how the proud SP-3 owners think about it, I am posting this poll.

Well, I have never noticed any noise from the display. After a few days I have set the display to turn off after (I don't know anymore exactly the time). I did that because I don't like so much lights surrounding the screen.
By the way I don't hear with great volume.

I can honestly say that I have never heard any noise from my display on the SP3, or any performance difference's with the screen on or off, but mine is set to go off like Buesto just because I like a nice dark room.

I do know that from past experience from selling TV's, especially with plasma's, that some people are extremely sensitive to certain frequency noises that most people don't hear, maybe you have extremely sensitive hearing Markus.

It is a strange thing, indeed.

I was surprised when I noticed it and could not make any sense out of it. If it was a "standard feature" of the SP-3, I would have expected it to have been mentioned here before, especially after 100 to 200 units having been sold. Being a Bryston aficionado and user for 25 years, I immediately thought of a defect, as I could not believe Bryston to release a product with an obvious flaw, at least in my perception. The other likely option would have been some manufacturing tolerances of the display, making some of them audible, while others might be dead quiet. Finally, there was the option that comes close to your suggestion, i.e. that I (and maybe a small number of others) might be more sensitive to a certain frequency range than "the rest" (=vast majority).

I had been waiting to place my vote until now. The idea being that I didn't want to influence the voters with me placing the inital vote where I just now did. Although I would have wished for more participation in the vote to get a more valid/reliable result, due to big numbers, the fact that, until now, I seem to be the only one to address and acknowledge this issue (apart from the video reviewer), directs in exactly the direction you suggested.

I am just wondering whether I will be able to acquire a SP-3 one day that does not exhibit this phenomenon for me, as it would clearly be something that I could hardly accept. If the SP-3 just wasn't so unique in the focus on the audio relevant feature set...
