source selector jumps on int amp.
« on: 19 Jul 2012, 10:39 pm »
I recently acquired a second hand Anthem Integrated 225 amp on ebay. The model is not more than 3-4 yrs old I believe.
Anyway the source selector switch occasionally jumps from cd to phono by itself.
Does the unit need to be fixed professionally or could there be a simple fix?

thanks alot

I couldn't view a good picture of how the front panel circuit board is connected to the mainboard.  I was thinking if it was a ribbon cable you could try to reseat it at either end (if they are plug in connectors), but from what little I could see (and that wasn't much), the front panel board might directly plug into the mainboard connector without a cable.

Can you identify any environmental condition that might be causing it to switch, like an air conditioner, refrigerator, etc. cycling on or off?  It that's the case, sometimes a plug in supressor can be plugged inline with the offending appliance.

Is the amplifier itself plugged into some kind of power conditioner or filter?

Thanks for help.. But not sure I get your meaning! You mention pictures which I don,t know about. Also external conditions like Aircon? I had assumed it was an internal fault in the amp?
Amp is plugged into a regular surge protector type power strip.
Anyhow  it would be nice to solve it.

Does it have a remote control option?
Sometimes interference can act like a remote control signal.

It certainly could be a fault in the amp.  But it could also be this particular design is more sensitive and susceptible to some anomaly on your house circuit that is not being filtered out.  It shouldn't happen, but without another identical model in it's place, it's hard to know for sure.  I do know I have had some amps with electronic source selection change inputs when triggered by a very small static charge when the front panel was touched.

That's why I was wondering if it could be correlated with the interaction of some other electrical device on the circuit.  One thing you might try is to connect the amp to a different house panel circuit receptacle with an extension cord and see if it still happens.

If it still does, there's not much you can do beyond checking the connection between the front panel circuit board and the mainboard, so it's possible it may require repair by a qualified service center.
