Server by Dell

Server by Dell

Dell Computer is an old company.
 If anyone has any suggestion on setting up the server components from Dell? I think the audiophile brands still a bit too expensive for this purpose.
 Which operating system is used for it? Program implemented? Any idea is welcome.

What kind of server?  Music server? DVD/Bluray server?  TV server?  I have all my music (FLAC), DVDs, Blurays, TV on an unraid "server" (really like a NAS, network attached storage, than a "server").

Stay away from Vostro(basic, entrance line), look on Optiplex machines(design to run 24h/7days) at resonable prices.
Other machines above from Vostro and Optiplex are expensives for what they offer.

I'm running my Transporter off a Dell Optiplex 760 which I picked up off of Craigslist locally for $150. Super quiet, super stable. I've got all my data (music, photos, documents, etc....) on two 2 TB hard drives and have my operating system mirrored on two small 160 GB hard drives. I'm using it right now as I'm in the slow process of building a new main computer. The Optiplex will eventually pull full on server duty in a closet.

Server only for music ! What kind of OS you use...windows 7 or something diferent??
Naim and Aurender have excellent servers but are still expensive price

When I bought the Optiplex, it had some manner of Linux running on it. The original owner told me he bought it off lease from Boeing. Not certain how true any of that was. I wiped the OS and installed Windows 7 (64-bit. ). I'm most familiar with Windows environments so I stuck with what I know.

Is this server just going to be a computer feeding a USB DAC? If so, your best bet would be to use a laptop, since a laptop doesn't require an additional monitor, keyboard and mouse. A laptop from Dell would work as well as most, but you could also find something inexpensive at Walmart, Costco or Best Buy.

On the other hand, if you go the Squeezebox route to computer audio then the sever can be just about anything, since it can be located anywhere in your house as long as its on your network. It can easily be run 'headless' (no monitor) by using remote desktop software such as VNC. For this type of server, a laptop is usually more expensive than need be. You can use a very small Intel Atom or AMD Zacate based computer that sits off in a corner or in the basement.
