You also have dynamic range of medium. I've compared Dark Side of the Moon- Pink Floyd, cd, dts and sacd. This was before my upgrades in equipment.

Going on memory I recall using 'C' weighted, with the cd the quietest passage was somewhere around 80 db, and begins to distort at 99 db.

Don't recall the quietest part for dts, but reached distortion at 107 db.

With sacd the quietest passage was approx. 70 db. Never reached the distortion level at 110 db, as I was afraid to push the spl level any further.

Certainly puts the various listening situations in context.
I do remember a performance of Turangalila where the orchestra
was very large and loud enough in some passages to nearly overload my ears.
In the quiet sections we were back to one quiet instrument.

No wonder it doesn't really work in the car, but on a quiet night at home it's
amazing.

One amp in for repair at the moment so we'll be doing Quadrophenia in mono tomorrow
