Anybody Using the Audioquest Dragonfly USB DAC?

Anybody using an Audioquest Dragonfly.  I am interested in your impressions for a portable MAC based system.  I understand this is a Sabre Chip DAC.

Actually, the most in depth comments (including those from Gordon Rankin at Wavelength) I have read so far was in a forum topic at the Computer Audiophile site

Heard one in-store at Music Direct with a number of headphones(forget the models) and it sounded great. Eventually plan to pick one up to keep in my computer bag. But I could also see running one of these with my main system if I decided to take some money out of my digital set-up.

First review I've come across:

And for me, the analog volume control that your computer's master volume or music app's volume slider controls is mighty cool. I bet Audioquest sells a ton of these.

Steve, thanks for the link.  I hope to pick up one of these at the Capital Audio Fest later this month.  Looks like a winner.

Interested to see how it works in combo with a Squeezebox Touch.

There is only one output though? So if you are using it as a DAC, the signal still goes through the headphone amp. (Do I have that right?)

yes, i would be much more interested in this if it had rca outs. maybe in the future they will make some different flavored ones with different outputs.

Ratso, check out the Halide DACs.

From my POV, nothing wrong with a mini-to-RCA cable.

Got the Dragonfly DAC. Same sound signature as odac but much more refined (has that 'lit up' sound, upper mids and higher but in a good way if you're a fan of 'clarity'). No external power needed, sounds great out the box. No digititis, vocal clarity is impressive and pulls you in, nice percussive energy. Still lightweight and a little 2 dimensional, but it's about as good as I could ask from a usb dac given its limitations. I popped it in and stopped analyzing after only a minute, always a good sign. Makes me as happy as my little french dac. BIG thumbs up. :thumb:

Cool, thanks.  Just what I need for traveling listening.

Why does AudioQuest tell owners to bypass the Dragonfly's analog volume controls?

Even Pure Music who offers their own volume control says:> It’s true: word length (resolution) is reduced with a digital volume control!

Just bought one - rarely am I an early adopter, so I've waited - haven't read of any operating issues so I'm now in.

Looking forward to this - just what a traveling audiophool would dream of.
