new ST QWTs
« on: 27 Jun 2012, 02:19 am »
i just wanted to thank Jim and his crew.  we are very happy with our new STs.  i think the speakers are very well rounded but a couple of things really jumped out at us compared to our old speakers...   as others have said, these speakers put out sufficient amounts and deep enough base to not need a sub. the other thing is bongos, fast bongos.  Wow!  i cant get enough of carlos santana and all of his drum varieties.  those 5" SEAS drivers are quick and taut. i havnt heard a RAAL in any of the Salk line, but i cant imagine the improvement being anything more than subtle. the  Hiquphon OW2 meshes so well, is airy and defined.  thanks again to the Salk family for all their hard work ;)

Hello and Congratulations!!

Its really amazing how well these SongTowers sound... they are really becoming a classic speaker in
their own right....in this price range etc...the quality and value are hard to beat.

Those little speakers sure do reproduce bongos well !!! I have many Santana CDs and yes they are FAST....

I use Franks UltraValve with them, used to use an Onkyo SR805 AVR, but the UltraValve and an AVA preamp has made the listening even nicer...

What are u using for an amp etc?

All the best
Alex

Amp:      Adcom 7500   150x5
Pre:       Legacy NexStep (re-branded)  --->  EAD Signature-8.  was an Ovation-8 but had it upgraded. Excellent Pre!
Source:  Oppo 83SE
Cables:   All DIY (unbalanced, coax & speaker) except for the analog pass through that came from EAD.
AC conditioning:  Shunyata DIY
room treatments -  not all completed.

the Oppo is just a pricey transport.  i keep trying and wanting the dedicated Sabre DACs to sound better in any regard
to the on board EAD DAC, but it just isnt going to happen. not that the Oppo sounds bad and i think it has a bit more resolution in the upper frequencies. a little more air.  the EAD DAC is better in every other way. of course, that is in MY room, with an Adcom amp and DIY cabling.
my search for a tube amp is still there, its just slowed a bit. Frank's gear will be under consideration, of course. AVA and Salk is like porkNbeans according to everyone who has heard them together. i think Belles would make for a nice Adcom replacement.
still, my family is very happy with the current setup.
my STs were a bit thick in the mid-bass for about 3 weeks. thats all gone now and the change happened relatively quickly when it did. over about a 2 day period, all that gravy washed away.

Note: I have a Oppo BD83se as well the Sabre dacs, I have a HRT MSii+ as well and its also ok as a dac....going to try a really basic dac in the future called the Objective Dac...
