Acoustic and Unplugged
« on: 26 Jun 2012, 02:31 pm »
I grew up listening to rock music, and although my tastes have morphed and expanded over the years, I still have a nostalgic place in my heart (or head) for some of that stuff.

I've found that some of the unplugged or acoustic or alternate arrangement do-overs really appeal to me more than the originals now. I'm guessing some or even most never got their deserved attention, possibly because of limited audience.

Here are a few listened to recently that I really like:

Heart - The Road Home

The Pretenders – Isle of view

Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill, Acoustic

Jethro Tull – Best of Acoustic

I know there are others.  The MTV "Unplugged" series was interesting, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Nirvana, etc.

I'd love to hear of your favorites in this genre. Are there any aging rockers who feel the same?

You can tell we're getting old when we remember when MTV played music.

The Nirvana Unplugged is my favorite.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's unplugged is just insane, but I'm not certain it was ever officially released in it's entirety.

Alice in Chains was another good one, IIRC.

Acoustic fan here as well.  Here are a few of my favorites (all live recordings):
Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds - Live at Luther (and many others available)
Jackson Browne - Solo Acoustic Vol.1 & 2
Nils Lofgren - Acoustic Live
Ben Harper - Live from Mars (second disc is acoustic)

Its a reality tv channel with shows like Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, 16 and Pregnant, The Real World and other quality programming.  However, it did produce the Unplugged series, especially good were the Alice in Chains, Nirvana and 10,000 Maniacs unplugged shows.

I like some of those acoustic reunion/re-arrangement sessions too. A lot of the songs turn out better than the original radio cuts because they are performed live with more feeling and emotion. Or, maybe after all these years they just sound better to me this way.

The Rod Stewart Unplugged and Seated CD is another good example of this.
