A guy tried to sell me Dish on the phone, 4 receivers for $35 per month.  Good price but this thread scared me until I can research more.
Thanks.  And take some pics of the un-install.

I've had dish for just over 4 years and really love them.  We had a little issue with wanting to go HD but rectified that by quitting service and signing up as someone new.  Little did I know they lease the equipment now rather than me owning it.  Oh well.  I've not had a problem with locals at all.  HD is great.  Service has been fantastic and it's cheaper than DTV and cable.  Programming is a touch more expensive but DTV wants $300 for an HD box - that's a lot of $1/month programming.  If you're having trouble with rain and it going out you've just got a weak signal.  Call the installer (especially if it's relatively new install) and have them come out and get you a better signal if possible.  If not, you'll be no happier with DTV.

I wish dish had a couple other programming choices, like Sunday Ticket (not that I'd get it, but maybe) the tennis channel HD locals and the NFL channel but hey, no one has everything.

I'm still considering Voom.  I hate having a TV that's the wrong size for 90% of my channels.

As to satellite service.. I have had Dish Network and it was pretty good but not great.  The picture wasn't great but the price was.  It looked like cheap digital processing.  If you go DN, just try to get good equipment from the start.  Demand the best! :)

I've had DTV and they were fine.  I chose the equipment so it was good quality.  I liked it when there were 2 companies, USSB was great.  I subscribed to all of USSB and had $5 of regular channels.  So, for about $35/mo I got every premium channel.  You may still be able to get a package like that, though...

Neither of them have exceptional customer service but none were completely awful either.  I'm dealing with the local cable company now.  I get local HD, ShowtimeHD, HBOHD, and a buncha regular cable for $40/month.  It's cheaper than anything else for what I'm getting, and very easy to operate.  The wife likes that part. ;)

Voom looked like a great option for me to, especially since they've got locals in HD and some great addl channels like Tennis and NFL, but a gaping hole and the killer was no ESPN.   :o

Have had Voom for about 2 months, have a kinda love/hate thing with it mostly due to programming, but it is getting vastly better.  Last month they added 6 or so ESPN, one in HD (which still has minimal HD content, but the graphics are purdier)  and a week or so back they put up TNT in HD, so I actually got to see some NBA playoff in HD and I'm not a big B Ball fan.  They are slowly filling the programming holes.  I want TechTV and some of Mark Cuban's channels.  Some of Voom's original channels are too high brow  for a clod-kicker like myself, but their offerings that I do like are great.  It's quirky, but livable.  Don't have the premium movie channels, so my cost is basically the same as Direct w/high def tiers.   If you get VaVaVoom, there is a total of over 3000 hrs of HD programming each month.  Yeah, like I have anytime to really watch anyway.   The local digital comes off air and the tuner in the Motorola is really fine.  What programming off air with HD is pretty amazing.  I need another antenna, and Voom will do that for me at no cost.  I'm like 85% happy so far and will keep it at least until I can see the next gen of the Voom STB.    Carl if you're in the area, call and take a peek.

Scott,
Thanks for your take on Voom... yet another reason to stop by... Any way you can make the trip for a meeting on the 13th?

Ok... back to the topic... hope the Dish folks get you all sorted, Rosco!

Isn't Voom supposed to be a huge ripoff? I believe you end up paying buttloads for their equipment and contract?  I've been in the market doing research as well and have found that if you have Cox Cable in your area, they are pretty darn good.

I know that if Cox sends out a tech to help you with a problem and if the problem is Cox-responsible, they waiver all fees for the service call.  But obviously if it's the customer's fault, theres a service call charge.  As for Dish, if you get a service truck out there, it's gonna cost you for that service call regardless of who's fault it is.

All companies have up and downs and you really have to decide what works for you.  If you live in a remote location, you're stuck with dish.  If your home is located near a Master Plant where they broadcast their signal, then you will never run into problems (cox).  If you like HDTV, then VOOM, but again, downfall is the cost and contract.

I've had dish since 96 and have rarely ever lost a signal due to rain and here in Oregon it rains Alot.  Also the picture is very good.  The installers are commonly a bit on the flaky side. Make sure you're getting maximum signal strength and that sucker is mounted so it can't budge in the worst windstorm.

well they were supposed to  be here at 6pm to install a new unit-its 7:50 and hes still not here, i called installer at 7 and was told he would be there in 5 minutes or so.
spent the last 45minutes on the phone with dish network, they called also and were told he was enroute after 30 minutes they called again and were told that the dealer had no way to contact the installer, they are pissed-they offered 2 months free service, i told them to keep it and i was going back to cable-they are giving me a week to set up cable before they disconect.

what a freeking mess

Man ...  I hope Dish can get your mess straighted out.  So much depends on local install/service quality, once that's fixed it's usually fine.

Andy..  my Voom install cost zero and I have no contract, no commitment.  Can bail anytime, no questions.   I rent the receiver for 9.50 month (can buy one for $499 which is inline with what Direct and Dish boxes are) and I get the 39.00 pregram package.  So I actually get 4 times the hi-def programing than I got with Direct and Voom will have more HD later this year, as they've leased more space on another bird and we'll get another larger dish to get it all.  The only problem I have with Voom is some of the quanity and quality of the programming.  I'll keep it for now, as it seems to make sense.  Direct will never have 50 channels of HD, neither will Dish, nor any cable system.  From Oct last year till April (when I sub'd) Voom had 1600 subscribers.  Since I sub'd over the past 2 month they've added 24,000.  Not perfect, but shows potential.  Still like the looks of OTA digital best though :)

Are you going to try DTV?
I have had DTV for 7 years and always had good service.  The Hughes boxes work flawlessly.  Even the move program where they install a new dish went like clockwork.  The guy even hid the outside wires in the locations we wanted.  And now we have three boxes and sets working.  Nothing but good experience from my point of view.

cheers
