Nikon D600

I am surprised there's no mention of the new D600 on Eye Fidelity yet.  But, then again, there's not much to talk about in terms of actual specs and price yet.

engadget

Pros for me:

No more 1.5x crop factor
Larger sensor means more spaced out pixels (great for me cuz I like night photography and this means less noise)

Cons for me:

Higher megapixel count (compared to most DX) sorta cancels out one of the pros?
Good fast lens for full frame are pricy and chunky (not the camera's fault but just relative to one who's moving from DX to FX)

Hm, interesting. 24 MP is more palatable than 36.

I suspect many Nikon folks who have had reservations about the 36 MP D800 will flock to the 24.3 MP D600.  The 24.3 MP sensor is supposed to be the same Sony sensor that's in the upcoming Sony A99 full frame DSLR and Sony RX1 mirrorless, and since Nikon usually tends to coax a little more performance out of the Sony sensors than Sony itself, it won't be long before Nikon D600 users start reporing how D600 IQ is better than D800, etc, especially at high ISO..

well I pre-ordered one at Amazon. and it was due to arrive on Sept 19. Was---as in, past tense. I cancelled my order. It is officially announced as of 09/13, as jvc posted. Pretty enticing features. after more info was published, I was not happy with the fewer auto-focus points, but more specifically how they are concentrated at the center. My D700 is already condensed as well. But since the AF pattern is a variation of the D7000, it would be a step backward. Focus is my personal weak spot, so I'll take all the help I can get.

I am not a megapixel geek, but I do tend to crop a bit. so more than my D700's 12MP was the other interesting draw. I don't need the D800's 36MP or it's size. I'd like to go smaller not laterally. I was hoping for more than 1 stop improvement over my D700 in high ISO ( I play there most often) but the verdict is still out.

Whoever gets one on AC let us know how you like her.

I would love to have the D800, personally. At first, I didn't think so. But, as much as I love taking pictures of hummingbirds, the crops would be a good bit sharper than they are now. The 36 mp gives so much better cropping options, and to me it's worth the extra money it costs. Now, who's got an extra $3000 they can let me have?  :green:

Here's some comparos of the d600 and d800:

http://www.nphotomag.com/2012/09/14/nikon-d600-vs-d800-the-20-things-you-need-to-know/

In general the idea seems to be that the D800 has "pro" features while the D600 is an "advanced consumer" camera.

Every day now I debate switching my order from the D800E to the D600. The D600 seems to be readily available, the D800E still not shipping...

Crikey! Still waiting

Well, that's a nice lens there in the difference in the price. I have yet to research the two properly tho.

My D600 is on the way!

They called to tell me the D800E was finally available, did I still want it. I said, as a matter of fact I was thinking of switching to the D600. They had it in stock also and I decided to save about $1300 when cards are considered. I ordered 2 32GB cards (they both are in the camera at the same time) that can do 95MB/sec.

Things that swayed me - the cost savings (including two SD cards instead of 1 SD and one CF), the 2 user settings on the dial: U1 and U2, very ergonomic, Frame Rate of 5.5 FPS, 24 is probably plenty for me, and is said to be 'optimum' for FX.

Maybe I will get more megapixels in the next generation or two when things are bigger and faster.

Now to get that micro (macro) lens.

Supposedly, the new bodies are having issues with oily/dusty sensors.
