new AE audio specs any better than before?
« on: 12 Jun 2012, 10:22 am »
Hi,

Have the tech specs on the audio side of things changed to the better? Nothing about that on http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/specs/ . Would have hoped Apple to 'bump' those too.

Thanks for any info,
Marius

I was unaware that Apple had introduced a Gen 3 Airport Express.  The obvious changes are that it now has separate WAN and LAN Ethernet ports instead of a single WAN/LAN port and it is now Dual-Band.  I don't know if anything has changed on the audio specs, but there were two potential problems that the Gen 2 had that the Gen 1 did not:

1.  Higher jitter at the optical output that actually caused dropouts and/or stuttering with some DACs, most notably those with the ESS Sabre 32 chip.

2.  When using a Y-adapter to send a mono analag signal from the audio output jack it caused severe distortion, making it unusable.  This probably wouldn't come up for many people, but I have one AE that sends its analog output to a single powered speaker and I was only saved because my particular powered speaker (Yamaha MSP3) happened to have dual buffered inputs that could be mixed.

The 5GHz band should result in a stronger signal from those computers/devices that are 5GHz enabled, but with about half of the usable range.

I was just about to buy another AE so thanks for the heads up!

Unfortunately they don't say anything about audio performance so I may have to just get one and find out. The ones I already own have always worked great with my Bryston DAC. I'd guess it's about the same, otherwise they would tout it, being it is Apple after all.

don't know if I have to be happy or not, having ordered an AE the day before Apple released the next generation (which I didn;t know of of course ), and received it today.... I know I can trust the 'oldie', but would be really annoyed of the latest model had better audio specs.

I'm not unpacking yet...

Thanks for any updates on this one!

Will be curious about the measurements of the new AE express, but the second gen clearly didn't have the solid digital output specs that got the original rave reviews (from Stereophile maybe? forget who measured it).

2nd Gen's digital was jitter city, had a lot of trouble pairing DACs with it.

Apple has never talked about audio specs, not frequency response, not signal to noise ratio and certainly not jitter.  This was obscure stuff best left to the audiophile population to try and decipher for themselves.

Apple is largely feature-driven, which is what most of their audience is also interested in.  They may talk about performance when talking about faster multiple core processors or higher resolution retina displays, but the only audio performance enhancement they really ever talked about was the move to replace a large portion of their iTunes 128kbps songs with 256kbps non-DRM songs.

I always thought Apple had some of the best designed hardware, but I was actually somewhat surprised to find out by comparison how frequency-limited the Apple ear buds were.  They were inexpensive obviously, but when I compared them to a half dozen other inexpensive ear buds and headphones that I had laying around, I realized that for whatever reason they were the worst sounding of the bunch.  Go figure.

I would expect to hear some talk and possible comparisons of the new Airport Express on the Computer Audiophile site.

I do like the ethernet passthru feature. That may be enough to get me to upgrade and get my Mac Mini off of the wireless connection.

Traded the new old model, and gave it a shot: if anything, it gives me a way better and stronger wireless network. up to 95mbit/s download now. Which is kinda nice for all uses, not only the music streaming business.

Is your upgrade from gen 1 or 2?
