Need Quality HDMI Cables
« on: 9 Jun 2012, 04:36 pm »
Just looking for a few suggestions on some 6'-8' HDMI cables.  I would like all of the latest technology but don't think I need a super expensive set.  Do you think $50-$60 each is enough to get high quality?  What manufacturers do you suggest?

Cheers,

James

Like many other articles/posts on the transmission of digital audio/video signal over cable fairly uneducated response.  1s and 0s are not flowing from one end of the cable to the other - http://www.bluejeanscable.com/articles/hdmi-cables.htm

Does that mean that expensive HDMI cables will perform better in every single situation?  No.  As someone noted in the thread Monoprice is very good for the money.  I have some of those.  I have Blue Jeans top of the line going to the projectors in the main (about 50 foot) and secondary basement (about 30 feet) projectors but found I don't necessary think they are better in short lengths for audio.

I like the Pangea lots.  I am using short lengths between Oppo players in 2 systems and HDMI audio de-embedders which take a PCM signal converted from SACD in the Oppos and send it to my DAC.  I have not tried the Pangea for video at all but prefer it on audio vs. the top of the line Blue Jeans I had prior to getting the Pangea.

For short lengths (less than 10 ft) I like the DH Labs ones that have the swivel on the end.  They stay plugged in!  And are like $20.

I recommend Belkin Pure AV , usually available cheap on the 'Zon...eats a lot of other more expensive (and cheaper one too) brands for lunch.

I'd normally say +3 for Monoprice without any hesitation but the HDMI cables I bought had ferrites on them which I thought would be a good thing. The problem is that the horizontally mounted HDMI ports on my Samsung TV are so flimsy I was afraid to use these cables, so I had the cable guy use a generic one when they came to setup their cable box.

If this doesn't bother you go for them. If it does see if Monoprice has HDMI cables without ferrites and buy them.

I bought a very nice, very reasonably priced cable from Oppodigital a few years back. Very satisfied.

another vote for Monoprice. excellent picture quality but with one caveat - my runs have all been 10ft or less.  for runs longer than 15ft there is a lot of conflicting information to digest.

i read the entire BlueJeans article and they lost some credablity with me fairly quickly. BJ states "the value of DVD-player upconversion ranges from dubious to clearly negative ".  there is no date associated with the BJ article. i am going to assume it is quite old. my first 2 upconversion players from Mitsubishi and Sony were not so great. the improvement in pic quality was inconsistent and not always an improvement. i now use an Oppo 83SE and my entire DVD collection has been reborn. the difference between BluRay and upconversion on many disks is indistinguishable. if you really disect the picture you can see a little more grain... but during a normal viewing, where you are engrossed into the picture, you never notice except for how good it looks!

I use monoprice HDMI cables.  My brother-in-law bought some high dollar cables (I forget the brand) we switched cables (HDMI & speaker cables) for a week and neither of us could tell the difference.

This is probably flogging a dead horse, but yes, for HDMI pretty much the cheapest seem to be as good as any.  I did and A/B with a blu-ray (inception) on a THX 42' 1080P plasma & went back & forth between a top of the line wireworld HDMI cable vs a $5 monoprice.  With my nose up to 5 inches away from the screen I could barely notice any difference. A few edge areas were perhaps slightly "cleaner".  Wanted to justify the wireworlds as the cosmetic look & construction were incredible, but couldn't justify it on performance.  So now it's pretty much monoprice or similar for all HDMI's.  Wireworld power cables & interconnects on the other hand, a whole other matter..........
