Thorens TD160 with pics
« on: 9 Jun 2012, 02:06 am »
Well my Thorens TD160 has just about completed the transformation from a caterpillar into a butterfly. I built the plinth and started to acquire all the items to refurbish it as well as update it. Well I had a hard time with the hand router. With the grain was no problem, against didn't work out as well. It was a big job. Bigger and more time consuming than I could tackle. I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my audio gear and my guns. I could have completed it, no problem, but I don't think I would have been happy with the final product. I have no time. I have a big project in front of me. Parts all over the dining room table. I would not be able to finish it. Now what?

Well I have always had my eye on the Artisan Fidelity tables. http://www.artisanfidelity.com/Intro.html

They look beautiful, he knows Thorens tables, so that's who I had take over my project. I just got it back last week. It is truly awesome to look at. It is a piece of art. It is mine.

Then I saw it... my tonearm is bent. It is canted to the left as well. It is done for. My brand new Jelco SA-250ST done for. This was a crushing blow. It was shipped with enough insurance to cover this amount of damage. I sent all the pics that the shipping company asked for. I am still waiting for a decision how this will be repaired. I am very unhappy right now. I just want to listen to a few albums.

Now let me try and post some of the pics of it. I will forgo the stock pictures. Most of you know what a Thorens TD160 looks like. These are the pics Chris sent me before shipping it off to me. Let me know what you think.

Sweet Indiansprings. I'll definitely be checking out the Artisan folks. I just pulled my 160 Mk II out of the 'closet' about 3 weeks ago after 15+ years. Leveled it, and away I went. It's stock except for the Grado G1+ cart. The new base is very nice work. Did you/they do any other tweaks ?

Sorry to hear of the tonearm glitch. Hopefully you get it resolved quickly.  :thumb: It's nice to spin some things that simply can't be found in digital (or are effectively cost prohibitive), and the dynamics were very impressive. Not to the level of the sound of vinyl_lady's system last year when I got to visit with her for a bit, but still a reminder of how good vinyl can sound.     8)

Yes Pretty much everything has been done to it. All the dampening of the suspended table and interior of the box. bearing polish all the tips and tweaks.

UPS had said they would provide the shipper a decision by the end of the next buisness day. That was Wed. the 6th.
I really want to get it set up.

:D After several months and countless phone calls. 30 pictures of boxes and packing materials, pictures of my bent tonearm. On top of that, UPS wanted me to send the whole table back. I refused and told them they needed to send someone out to my place or go off my pictures.
They have finally sent me $600 of the orig. $1200 it was insured for.
Do you think I deserve to enjoy my table now???

Hey Indiansprings,

If you're looking to start a hobby I have a circa 1975 TD160 sans cartridge in good working condition.  Original tonearm is intact, original dust cover, manual and original packing materials.  I decommissioned it in 2010 when I bought a new VPI Classic w/Benz Wood SL.  PM me if you're interested.  I'd rather see it in a good home than collecting dust in the basement.

Regards,

Bill
