First Step- accessing the room- what to do?
« on: 8 Jun 2012, 02:05 pm »
Hello All:
After a recent move and due to lack of space my "listening room" (aka man cave) has been delegated to a small loft above a smaller room.  I will provide more specifics on size, description and pictures.  But bottom line, i am now dealing for the first time with a problematic room. Where does one begin.  Is there a prior thread on this as i could not seem to find one.

More specifically, space demands that the monitors be placed under a sloping ceiling with near field listening about 6 -8 feet away.  The room is three sided with one side open and up to a tall tall ceiling as the loft only fits over part of the other room.

Knowing my system for a long time i am now dealing with weird echos, room reflections, VERY muddy mid bass.  Not to mention a bouncy floor and restricted set up options.

So how does one begin to access the room for planned corrections.  I recall mention of "measuring kits" but i am not tech savvy and the thought of microphones and spectrum analysis is a bit daunting.  However, it is clear that the room to use the proper acoustical engineering term "sucks."  I have temporary placed crappy corner foam triangles on the floors in the corners to the right and left of the speaker (speaker side of the room) and this does help the mid bass somewhat.  On the positive side when there is no carpet or foam the slanted ceiling kinda gives the monitors that your at a nice auditorium feeling.

I appreciate comments and suggestions.

How about taking pictures at different points of the room, giving us the room dimensions, mentioning the name of the speakers, how far apart the are from each other, the listening positions, the side walls, and the front wall...for starters. If you can't put up pictures, a diagram of your room delineating all the details mentioned above would be useful.

Best,

Anand.

I had a similar problem. I e-mailed an acoustic treatment manufacturer who has a circle here. He asked me a bunch of questions and recommended a plan for treatment which I intend following. Couldn't have been simpler.

Where does one begin.

This is short and right to the point:

Near field can be excellent, and I'd even argue it's often better than farther away, at least in rooms that don't have adequate acoustic treatment.
