Cornet2 230V Hammond Transformer
« on: 6 Jun 2012, 04:33 am »
Hi all.
Sorry, maybe this is a paranoid question, but I'm no expert and I don't want to burn the house down.... I just received nearly the last parts shipment for a new Cornet2 build. The info sticker on the top of the Hammond 370BX transformer lists wire colour combos for 100, 110, and 120V. It will still work using the appropriate wiring for 230V, correct? Also, is it better to wire it for 240V to guard against mains fluctuations (~mid 230s)? Thanks for the help!

As soon as the transformer has two primaries - you can connect them serially and get wiring for doubled voltage. So it will work for 230V.
The transformer could be wired exactly for 230V (120V from one primary and 110V - from the other), but I recommend you to follow the wiring table from JH. Yes, it's better to wire for 240, but be prepared to tune the heating voltage and (maybe) B+.

Thanks Poty. Now just about all that is left is cutting out the chassis (and bypassing the ss stage in my integrated!). I can't wait to fire her up.

Hey, I never thought of that - you actually can mix up the primaries if they are wired in series (one at 120 another at 110).  Just don't do it if their wired in parallel, though!

Start with the normal 240V setting and see how that works out.

Finally up and running beautifully. What a fun couple of weeks working on it in my spare time. Great stuff.

Cheers Poty. It really is a wonderful (and painless/straightforward) project, even for greenhorns like me! It helps that the online community is so willing to help too. I'll certainly watch the Hagtech website for future kits. I thought about trying a p2p JH Clarion power amp, but maybe that's a little too advanced... I would probably not be tidy enough to keep the hum low.

:) You mean Cymbals? It's amasing, but I'm now building modified Cymbals (stereo) + Clarinet (also modifed for Russian tubes) p2p with some PCBs (my own power supply PCBs). I'm not sure if I can squeeze all this into not very roomy chassis, but I'll try.

Actually, I did publish plans for a CLARION power amp.  It is low powered SET 2A3 built from easy to get parts.
