WTB: 1980's Sony Walkman Cassette Player.

Hey!

OK, Fellow ACers please help me relive my youth. :D

I'm looking for vintage 1980's Sony Walkman cassette player. Especially early to mid '80s models with window that you can see the tape playing. A working one in good condition and above preferred but will consider non-working one if the motor still spin and ex+ cosmetic.

So, if you have one hiding in your cabinet drawer or in closet let me know what model you have and how much you want for it. Thanks :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Anyway, TrungT thank you for your offer. But I'm really looking for an earlier one with window to see the tape running. Well, what is what I remembered most back than. Some of the early to mid '80s models have this.

Thanks again. Well, maybe you can try to sell your for $198 on Amazon.

Take care,

I got the first Walkman produced by Sony that used to belong to my stepfather.  This thing is RED, it is a AA battery eater...it needs 4 of them to run! I think it might run just 2 hours on the 4 batteries.

I even got a overseas version of a Aiwa autoreverse with remote and rechargeable battery from the late 1990s...They are much better than all the cheap junk that was made for US consumption during that period and later.

I still remember people listening to their mixed tapes in the late 1980s and early 1990s.  People with large foam headphones.

Then, I remember that they were slowly replaced by portable CDPs.....with horrible skipping issues.

That gave way to early CDPs with memory buffers before the Ipod came and ate all of these things for lunch.

I still miss the variety of these portable devices...but you would need to kill me in order to pry my Iphone 4 from my hands....the convenience is just something never seen on those things.

PS:  I will see what sort of walkman I can haul back from my mom's place Buddy.  If it comes to it, I will show you the Aiwa I was telling you about....Sorry, no nice tape peep window in this one.

Buddy,
I've got a Walkman WM-D6C sitting in a drawer and I haven't used it in a long, long time.  It's a very nice unit and based on selling prices on the web, still in pretty high demand.  It worked fine when I last used it but that's more than 5 years ago.  I can put in some fresh batteries and check out how it works if you're interested.

Attached below is a stock photo from the web.  I can take a real picture when I get home.

Wow, that is a classic.  That is the unit that Stereophile always had in the Class C for audiorecording devices back in the days...until it was no longer made.  Nice unit Gary.

Hey!

Phil thanks for the respond on this. But it is not quite the one I'm looking for.

Yes, I know I'm a bit picky on this. Want to really satisfy the little boy in me on this one.

   Thanks again.

Take care,

Hey!

Paul, you are probably wonder why I want to do this

As for the first Sony Walkman. That one is highly collectible now a day I think. Well, not because it was good but more of being the first one.

I remembered the Aiwa. They were a big competitor of Sony on Walkman. They made some nice ones too.

Oh! Yes, early CD Discman. I remembered my first one of which didn't have antishock and it was damn annoying! I once had an all metal Sony Discman with optical output also I think it was something like 303. It was a beauty but didn't have the antishock though. I think there is a bit of demand for it among audiophile today due to the optical out. Sadly I think I sold it to my school classmate back than.... should have kept it

Well, let me know what you have.

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Good luck with the search.  I probably have not used mine in a bit more than 10 years.  I find that it can be handy since I still have a cassette deck (in the secondary basement system) that gets used once in five years or so but if someone wants a taped dubbed to another tape it can be of use.

Although it has not been used in perhaps 3 years, I still have a Pioneer Elite CD recorder and I also have a DVD recorder (forget what brand) which with my old mini-DV camcorder would get used once a year up until a few years back.  I still have a dbx 224 unit with the cassette deck.

I have not used either of my LD players in 3 years (one in the main and one in the secondary basement system) but I still like having them.

Hey!

Gary, that is a nice machine you've got there. Yes, I remembered reading about it on Stereophile and drooling over it back in the day at J&R store. It is probably the best portable cassette recorder made for it size. Yes, there is still demand for this.

I have to say it is a bit more than what I want, but than again it was one of those machines that I was drooling over back in the days. It would a  nice addition to my Nakamichi 1000 I guess

Well, I'm sure it will sound better than any consumer Walkmans and probably can drive headphone better too. Hmm... very tempting I must say.

Gary, still... let me know if it still work.

Take care,

Buddy,
There is good news and bad news.  The good news is that it's in great physical shape and that replacing the batteries makes the motors work and the electronics come on just fine.

The bad news is that one of the hubs doesn't turn so it can't play cassettes.  Probably a belt needs to be replaced or some part needs a bit of oiling.  I found the service manual on line, so I'll pop it open and see if it's an easy repair.  I guess you don't need to be tempted for now . . .
I'll let you know if I get it working.  Until then, here are a few photos.
