Low(er) Gain Amps
« on: 29 May 2012, 12:03 pm »
Anyone know of amps with gain ~20db?  I know of the First Watt line so other then that. I don't understand why power amps all have 30+ db of gain. It's so unnecessary.

Hmm 20 will be tough to find. Most don't go below 26 dB.

I really liked the ability to decrease the gain on my Atmasphere amp by inserting some jumpers in place of 2 6SN7s.

+1 that finding 20dB could be an epic quest. My Bryston 7BSST2's are switchable from 29 to 23 dB and I do use the lower setting.

I use my 14B at 23 db also. I am not sure I would want to go under 20 DB in amplification. I would look at moving down in a pre amp in adjusting overall system gain.

From a First Watt paper "So here we are in the New Millennium, and thanks to Tom Holman and
THX we’ve got lots of gain in our electronics.  More gain than some of us
need or want.  At least 10 db more."

23 is close enough to 20. I was just throwing out 20. My ZenV9 is 12db.
