Portland, OR - record store recommendations?
« on: 24 May 2012, 02:32 am »
I'm gonna be in Portland for a couple of days next week (before T.H.E. Show in Newport) and I wanna go record shopping.

Used/new vinyl stores - any recommendations?

Welcome to Oregon. It's great here.

I really have no idea where to send you, though. Portland is so rich in record stores that you might think you've entered a time warp.

The right thing to do is start at Music Millennium. Their vinyl selection can be a bit iffy, but it's a real record store right down to the uneven floors. Either of the Everyday Music locations will almost fill the empty spot left when Tower Records closed its stores.

On the smaller end of things, Second Avenue Records has a great vibe and a great stock -- visiting it is a must. Jackpot (two locations) has been handling its vinyl exceptionally well. If you're looking to avoid the jazz and classic rock entirely, 360 Vinyl will cover you. If you're looking to dig those up, Boom Wow has you. Mississippi Records tends to be another stop on the tour, but it can be iffy. It is, however, just down the block from some fine bars. If you have a ride, try to convince your driver to get you out to Vinyl Resting Place -- it's worth the trip.

I'm probably missing even more -- and that's just in the city limits. I can probably point you at particular stores if you have an idea of what you're hunting for.

And if you make it out to the Oregon Coast, I'll make sure there's a beer waiting for you.

As for me, I'm hoping to find some good bins down at T.H.E. Show.

Thanks mal.  I'm after more leftfield-ish stuff.  More RA/Pitchfork fodder than anything else.  Probably won't have a ride so the city limits are my limits.

If I had limited time and no ride, I'd try to limit my trip to Music Millennium (easy bus trip) and the downtown stores. I might even pass on Music Millennium.

I sure someone else will pop along to give better advice, though.

Music Millenium is within walking distance of my hotel, so that'll be my first port of call I think.

Yeah, it's too bad the T.H.E. Show isn't in Newport...Oregon.   :thumb:

I'd just wind up spending the whole weekend in Nana's.

Having just spent a week in Portland, splendid city to visit BTW,
I can second Jackpot Records, on W. Burnside, I believe.
Good Hunting.
