Wanting a GREAT low volume speaker build.
« on: 23 May 2012, 05:46 am »
I would like to build some great low volume speakers. I have a very live house. The higher I turn up the volume the more things get fuzzy and weird. I have noticed that at lower volume the dynamics are better. Kinda makes sense realy. When I say my house is live I mean LIVE it lives. The floors are all tile. Not a scrap of carpet. Most of my listening is done in the dining room so table and for most part chairs are hard surfaces. It certainly is a tough environment. I have looked at Bass traps but I am not thrilled with the look. One good thing about a live house is that sound has the potential to sound pretty good even when you are far removed. Anyway, "Jackman" had a post about enjoying his NC-400 at low volumes. I thought that might be just what I need. Sorry for the breathy discourse. Anyway, suggestions for low volume builds would be appreciated.

You might consider single full range drivers.  They don't do ear bleed SPLs, and they give up some on both the highest and lowest frqs.  Because they don't have XOs, they have a coherence that is missing from all but the very best of multi-way speakers.  Good SFRDs have excellent downward dynamic range, so they can sound very good at low volume.

Depending on your room and preferences, you might consider:
--BIB; Bigger is Better back loaded horn which uses corner/ceiling as extension of the horn.  easy build.
--Metronome; MLTL floor standing design with high WAF
--small horn like the Frugal Horn Mk3

I like the idea of either the Frugal or the Metronome. I also like the easy build part as this will be my first build attempt since I was 14 some 40 years ago. I actually like the idea of horns as I actually like the sound of horns. I am a very good wood worker but am a neophite at electronics. Currently I am listening to Magnepans in the room on a Class D amp.
Hopefully others will chime in for speakers that might sound good in a live environment at low volumes.

Vintage 12" Tannoy Golds are great. A cabinet with a folded horn maybe? Easy and low watt friendly.
