Battleship?
« on: 22 May 2012, 04:51 pm »
OK,  I'm not even slightly interested in this one,  but at least one or two folks with valid driver's licenses must have seen it - any thoughts?

how many alternate universes exist in which we don't get almost overwhelmed by vastly superior and malevolent alien species, only to surmount them by ... oops, almost gave it away

This from the same guy that brought us the brilliant FNL and the rather twisted, dark and very successful "Hancock"  - quite different, both of which I quite enjoyed

well, I guess who could resist the offer of a blank check to go as crazy with an outrageous premise as possible - a cynic might be inclined to think of this as the most expensive "punked" yet

I didn't even know this was released.  It seems the movie isn't popular with some of the critics.  I was reading reviews and I came across this:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1440129/board/nest/199393534

I haven't seen it, but this take on it seems plausible based on the criticisms.   :dunno:

All I can say is pathetic!!!. Stubid acting and very childish behavior, I wish these directors would stop treating us movie nuts like little children. Avengers on the other hand toung and cheek, but not stupid, just an all round good family action movie. Battle ship dumb, dumb, dumb :duh:

Just the idea of making the game into a movie seems absurd even by Hollywood standards.  The facts are that Hasbro is sitting on the rights to a whole bunch of intellectual properties and they intend to wring some cash out them, logic and common sense be damned.  Thus we'll be subjected to more of these baffling productions in the future.  IIRC they're doing a Stretch Armstrong flick, too.  That sounds spellbinding doesn't it?

If Battleship takes off, maybe we'll even see Yatzee and Uno up on the silver screen!

Well the continued success of the Marvel /  DC world probably has a lot of folks scrambling to meet the demand for action

what, you're 'sposed to tell a story too?  we thought that an entire generation raised on video games / first shooter action etc just needed to see bright/shiny/fast, with the occasional PG13 skin thrown in case adrenalin wasn't high enough

Let's just say that hundreds of millions of dollars won't turn a Berg into a Snyder or Blomkamp

Sounds like Battleship is a John Carter-level flop.  Maybe you actually can go broke overestimating the public's stupidity!

Well Berg doesn't have anything to do with the end product, as Babcock said this is a straight money-grab by Hasbro. Filmmaking by committee. And as good a visual stylist as Snyder may be, he could use Berg's more grounded background, and Blomkamp has all of one film to his credit (based on his own short). What's more interesting is that prior to this Berg was doing a lot of prep work for 'Dune', but that project was scuttled. Battleship was a good move for him to prove he could tackle a large scale effects project. His previous films showcase his ability to get good performance from actors on lower budgets (including TV show 'Friday Night Lights'), so dud or no Battleship is still a win for him. Hopefully the Dune project will move forward again.
