Practicing for Sunday's annular solar eclipse.
« on: 19 May 2012, 03:08 am »
Sunday's partial eclipse is supposed to sweep across Missouri, so tonight I ran a few tests.

800mm, ISO 100, 1/3,200 second, F32 with an ND4 neutral density filter at about 5 minutes before the sun was gone.  The diagonal view through the atmosphere cuts down the sun's intensity so much that you can see the ground in the image.

Lens set to infinity, and when the sun was higher I viewed from 2' behind the camera while adjusting the tripod head, so I wouldn't have to put my eye right up to the viewfinder.

This one was about 15 minutes before sunset.  Shutter speed at 1/8,000th, F32.  If you look carefully you can see a line of sunspots running just to the right of a line from 11:00 o'clock to 5:00 o'clock.
Will try again tomorrow with #14 welder's filter up against the viewfinder.
