The T7, TAS, and Remote Control?
« on: 24 May 2004, 12:13 pm »
Just saw the AVA ad in the latest issue of TAS, and noticed the small print next to a picture of the T7SLR that said a remote control option is available. How much? Can an owner install it, or does the unit need to be sent back? Which functions can be controlled? Also, is this option available for the T7ECR? I searched the AVA website, but couldn't find any info.

Thanks.

We will be offering a remote control for all our new preamps as an extra cost option soon.  It consists of a very high quality motor driven pot, the receiver circuitry for it, and a small two function sending unit.  The functions will be volume up, volume down, and mute (complete muted sound).  The remote will also be available as a retrofit to many of our older models.  Price has not been determined yet, nor availability date.  The prototypes are working flawlessly, it is just gathering all the parts together to build them (some parts have pretty long lead times).

To offer remote volume without sacrificing sonic quality, a mechanical motor driven pot was necesary, as the dynamic range of available solid state configurations have a dynamic range of a cassette deck, ok for home theater but not ok for maintaining audio purity and dynamics.  Thus the functions are limited to those absolutely necessary as more bells and whistles, done right, would be prohibitively expensive.

Stay tuned, we will let you all know when it is ready to ship.

Sounds like the remote I had on my Bryston B60 -- volume and mute, very solidly implemented, and well isolated from the signal path.

I never wanted more from a remote.

It's all you really need -- if you need a remote at all.  I've kind of gotten used to doing without one

The main thing I used mine for on the B60 was muting the preamp when I flipped or changed LPs.

Thanks for the response. A remote volume control would be fantastic (although my doctor would think otherwise). Please let us know when it becomes available.

Is it possible to get an update?  Saving for a new preamp has, for many of
us, a bit of a lead time too...

thanks...

The remote control will be available in about 10 weeks (the factory lead time on the custom made Alps best quality motorized pots).

Prices will be:  As an option on all new SL chassis based preamps  $250.
As an option on all EC chassis based preamps  $300

As a retrofit on all current production SL chassis based preamps  $300
As a retrofit on all current produciton EC chassis based preamps  $350

The new option prices will apply (instead of the retrofit prices) to all new AVA chassis preamps shipped within one year of the introduction date.

The remote is only available for current production AVA chassis. The remote is not available on previous SL chassis generations, Dyna chassis, or on previous circuit generations.

The remote will not be available as a do it yourself option for preamplifier kits, but can be installed on qualified preamp kits as a factory wired option.
