I don't know - Joe has so many 'at his bests', IMO.

I can remember feeling a bit disappointed in 'Wormhole Wizards...' on the first listen until 'Wind in the Trees' knocked me onto my ass. As Joe mentions on the introduction of the linked performance, the footwork is important too. I've read some pretty heavy criticisms of Joe's music - some people just don't get it.

Like so many albums, the second playing improved my opinion.

Vai had another teacher in Frank Zappa. If you doubt that, then you've never listened to 'Flex-able'. As with Joe, there are many who think Steve is all flash and no substance. I strongly disagree with such a sentiment. He's triggered that 'lump in my throat' feeling as much as he's simply staggered me with his technical mastery. 'Alien Love Secrets' still ranks near, if not at the top of my list of all-time greatest guitar albums (with his '7th Song' vying for that spot as well).

There are so many fantastic guitarists (some of whom have been mentioned in this thread - many more have not) - I could never name a favorite. I think the guitar is a friggin' amazing instrument.

Steve Vai is the only one to even come close to Joe Satriani. Most of Joe's playing is blues rock. I'm not a fan of blues music but Joe's "Summer Song" is a grand slam!

There was a time where I thought he was the best but my tastes grew beyond what he was offering. He is amazingly talented, I don't take anything away from his playing ability. But I found his song structure and rhythms kind of dulled me out. Respect, but I feel I've moved beyond. These days Christophe Godin and Mattias 'IA' Eklundh are standard bearers. And look out for Jan Zehrfeld from Panzerballet, or Giacomo Castellano. These guys are not widely known but are practically too good for words. Add Mike Keneally to that list and Guthrie Govan.

Hey(milford3), your opinion is certainly valid, but I could honestly not make such a statement about anyone.

What do you think of players like Steve Morse (or Hackett (or...)) who play so many different styles with apparent ease? How about all those who laid the foundation for Satriani and Vai? Could you seriously forward the proposition that Jimi Hendrix doesn't 'even come close to Joe Satriani'. (I think Joe would strongly disagree.

Lets not forget Robin Trower. "Bridge Of Sighs" album is the best still to this day!

Nice list, did'nt know about these. It is so subjective to say who the best is. By the way what systems do you guys have? Not sure if 10K speakers would give more clarity to the electric guitar listening.
