Technics EPA100 tonearm queing device replacement?
« on: 15 May 2012, 07:19 pm »
The cueing device has been destroyed by a previous owner with some parts missing from it also, so unable to repair/rebuild it. I'm looking for a replacement for it. I noticed on e-bay one fellow had the same arm and mentioned he replaced his cueing device with a Micro-Seike one. Looking for options. The barrel of the original is 11.9mm in diameter :( and the height is 23mm. I guess the height isn't so critical as it can slide up and down in its mounting clamp as necessary. Anybody have anything that will work or any Ideas on getting this arm back in business?

Kevin at KAB probably can help with replacement parts. He's a great guy and you could send it in to him for a rebuild....

if i understand you correctly, you are looking for something like this?

as you can see, its barrel diameter is 0.9mm larger, but maybe you could enlarge the clamp's hole?

Thanks to both of you. Yes, I did see the Jelco device and yes that is what I'm looking for. (good call) The only problem is that the arm is coated or anodized and not sure what would happen if I try to drill it out. I also went to the KABUSA website. looks interesting. I will e-mail him today.

you would be looking at enlarging the hole ~0.035".  anodized or not, i can't imagine it would be an issue.  i am not even sure you would need to drill - likely a round file would be all that is needed.  curious what your final resolution is; keep us posted...

good luck,

It's not always that simple.  Often the device is inserted from the bottom and the arm platform has to clear the top of the supporting structure. The distance from the lever to the arm platform becomes a factor.  On most of the ones I've seen, the arm platform isn't easily removed.  I'd be reluctant to enlarge that hole.  If I remember correctly there isn't much room and that arm is too nice to mess up.

You should really call Kevin at KAB. It might save you a lot of grief.

I emailed Kevin at KAB and he said parts are not available and had no good solutions. I guess I'll just keep looking and hoping before I bite the bullet and ream out the existing mount to fit the Jelco. Does anyone have a Micro-Seiki arm that could check their cueing device for dimensions?

i dunno; i checked pics of this arm on line - it looks like it would be easy enough to file out 0.9mm w/a round file. plenty of access from underneath.  i don't think i'd be wanting to drill, tho......

12mm is the typical size for the hole so finding a 11.9mm lifter barrel shouldn't be too hard?  Maybe one could be sourced from a non-working Technics or other table.  The height, 23mm - it would be nice to keep the height of the lever the same as original. I guess 3mm isn't much difference.  Is 23mm the height of the hole or the entire lifter?

Technics made millions of tables but most of the autos and semi autos will be different.  If the lifter platform can't be removed from the replacement, then you'll have to angle it up from underneath. Sometimes it helps to extend the cueing mechanism.  Some places like Needle Dr sell replacement parts for Project and Rega. Maybe one of those would be a better fit. Micro Seike might be harder to find than Technics.  As long as you have the set screw you should be OK even if you have to enlarge the hole a little.
