Cornet owners, a little info please.  Which tube in your Cornet produce the biggest improvement in sound when replaced?  In addition to the 5Y3 rectifier, I found out that the middle 12AX7 influenced the soundstage and warth more so than the other ones.  It also affects the L-R balance of the Cornet.  Just my observation.  Please comment.  Thanks.

Doc,

FWIW, I've played around with a number of AX and AU tubes along with a few rectifiers.  In my experience, the choice of AU tube makes the biggest overall difference.  Next in line the AX (V1 and V2) tubes also impact the sound.  Finally, the choice of rectifier also changes the sound.   I find that V1 is the most critical of the AX tubes.  The choice in V2 provides more subtle changes.  So there are a lot of inter-dependencies and you can flavor the sound by varying all 4 tubes.  With some rectifier and AX tube mixes, I like different AU tubes.  For current production, I actually like the Sovtek LPS quite a bit in the AX positions.

Grant

GRD,
I am using RCA black plates right now and an unidentifiable 5Y3 rectifier and I like the sound.  However, I noticed a slight shift to the left of the sounstage.  I thought at first its the anti-skate in my TT so I played with it but to no avail.  I played with the tubes in my phono (my preamp is passive hence nothing to play with) and found out it was the middle 12AX7 causing this.  I rolled Jan Phillips, Ei, JJ, RCA blacks, and another no name tube but to my ears the black plate won.  However, just to fool around, I combined tube-makes.  RCA's on the outer 12AX7 , JJ on the middle 12AX7 and JAN for the AU.  (sorry, not familiar with the V1-V4 config.)  The rectifier was also rolled using Tungsol, GE and Sylvannias(?).  The one I cannot identify won hands down in bass extension and openess in the highs.  The last combo regarding the 12AX7's and 12AU is the one I'm running now.  Loving the sound.  As always GRD, thanks for the reply.

John.
