ONKYO TX 8050 w/Boston Acoust. SubSat6
« on: 14 May 2012, 06:19 pm »
I'm new here and understand little beyond a consumer level, but am looking for answers.  I just purchased an ONKYO TX 8050 receiver.  My speakers are a Boston Acoustics SubSat 6 series II speakersystem.  Each speaker and the subwoofer is labelled 8 ohm.

The SubSat connection instructions say, "Although the SubSat system is a three-piece system, your amplifier sees the system electrically as a normal pair of speakers.  Run wires from the amplifier or receiver to each satellite and the bass module as shown below."

(Twist positive-left lead from satellite and positive-left lead from sub together and connect to positive-left lead on reciever, and so-on for all connections.)

The ONKYO manual says, "Don't connect more than one cable to each speaker terminal.  Doing so may damage the receiver."

The ONKYO has a a choice of speaker impedance settings; 4 ohm or 6 ohm.

Both ONKYO and BA customer service say I need a separate amplifier to power the subwoofer if I want to avoid damage to the TX8050.  That seems to conflict with the BA manual statement that "your amplifier sees the system electrically as a normal pair of speakers".

HELP, please.  I don't want to buy new speakers, but I don't want to ruin a brand new receiver, either.  Thanks.

You can use your A speaker connections for the Sats and the B speaker connections for the sub. That should work. I would just be careful with the volume control at the start until you get a good idea of what it is capable of. Your receiver is 4 ohm capable.

From the BA manual:  "If your receiver of amplifier has more than one set of speaker connections (SpeakerA/SpeakerB), connect your SubSat system to one set only.  The system will not perform optimally if, for instance, the satellites are hooked to speaker connection "A" wile the bass module is hooked to speaker connectionn "B"."

Her is the connection diagram from the speaker manual:

Set the speaker impedance switch to 4 ohms and twist the wires together as shown in the BA owners manual.

So, connected according to the diagram, does "the amplifier sees the system electrically as a normal pair of speakers", mean they produce a 4 ohm load?
