Cleaning mold of LP covers
« on: 13 May 2012, 08:14 pm »
Well, after about a 20 year break from vinyl (been doing CDs), I picked up a Yamaha YP-800 t-t and am looking to reacquaint myself with some music not heard in a long time.

Here’s the problem. I have mold growing on some of the album covers. They were stored upright in boxes in a supposed dry crawlspace, but we had some water infiltration which never wetted the boxes, but raised the humidity levels to the point where there is some mold on the album covers.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of it?  I’m going to try some bleach/water and rub down the covers followed by drying them with a towel and air dry the rest of the way. I also thought of using some Lysol spray which kills a lot of mold, but I’m not sure on whether it might damage the covers.

Some of these LPs I bought 40+ years ago and the records themselves are in great shape, but the covers are skanky.

In fact, grooving to Beck-Ola right now.

Spray some Lysol on a rag and wipe down the covers. It works great and gets rid of the smell. You'll have to change rags often. You can see the mold on them and you'll know when. You won't damage anything. I've done this to hundreds of LPs. Bleach is probably a real bad idea.
