Tang Band 1808 in MLTL
« on: 5 May 2012, 07:31 pm »
I have some MLTL cabinets that were built for the Fostex 206/207. Can anyone tell me if I can use the W8-1808 in these cabinets. The dimensions are 11.25 x 9.50 x 42.50 (inside) - 2.6 cu. ft. volumn.

Would the W8-1772 be a better fit?

I beliver brinesacoustics.com offers MLTL for both the stated Fostex and Tang Band drivers.  You could check exterior dimensions.

Bob might even (probably for a small fee) run the MathCad analysis if you can give him all the dimensions.

If nothing else he can advise on drivers and offer plans, flat packs, assembled/unveneered cabinets, or the finished product for the drivers he works with.

I have been down this path and it did not turn out well.  Both Bob B and Dave provide useful information and constructive critique of my errors in thought and production. Both were taken to heart of a true DIY person and my failures were great leaning exper.  Please look back to the half chang with 1808 incident to see some response by Bob and Dave.  The 1808 needs 90 liters, the other one needs less, thus the reason Bob was using it.  Again see previous posts for more info.  Take the time to find the correct box, i'll have a new verson of the Tang Band 1808 in a fonken style out in the next week or so thanks to Dave.  I have set a test drive at an audio recording studio to measure it out also.  JP

Indeed I did run sims for a fellow for the 1808 in a MLTL. I liked ~100L which worked out to be a 48" tall box  and however you want to work the CSA. I would have to dig for the rest of the info and the guy did pay for my efforts. I just gave you enough info to reverse engineer it, though.

Thanks for the great advise guys. Like a number of you, I have been building and experimenting over the years. Building designs that look good (and ususally sound good too).  So I have some cabinets left over from other designs and I hate to just through them away. I had planned to use one of these for the W8 1772 - one of Bobs designs.
However, I have an open baffle system I've built with the Visation and Eminance drivers that I like a lot but is not quite what I want. I probably can improve the Open baffle speaker by using the W8 1808. But if it does not get me to a satisfactory level, I'm stuck with more speakers on the shelf.  I was hoping for 2 options from one driver and trying to avoid buying both the 1772 and 1808. So, from what I've read here the 1808 is better suited for an open baffle and the 1772 for a MLTL.  Maybe I'll try a  search and see if there are any used ones available. Thanks,
John

Hello John!
The 1772: will work just fine on an Open baffle. Mine does :) The improvement from the b200:s is substantial! (I used to have the b200). Since you already have the Eminence woofers for bass, you don't need the higher QTS of the 1808:s.

Good luck!
