Problem with Files in W7 Libraries/Documents
« on: 2 May 2012, 04:35 am »
I just newbie on W7.
I had over 2K files of many types in 42 folders saved in a DVD disc caming from a W-XP.
They were originally grouped by brand in a damaged W-XP PC, there are many brands of equipment in folders, some folders have 300 files groups in separate areas within the folder.

I downloaded these files on a new W7 PC in the Libraries/Documents place. To my dismay the files are now sorted in alphabetical order, in only one area inside the folder, a huge mess.
The W7 prevent to move the files in a new area inside the folder, the files are fixed in that place.

Obviously this way is impossible to work with or find a file. I wish to know how I can stop the alphabetical sort inside the Folders, and groups the files by brands again inside the folder.
Thanks for any help

First you still have all the files backed up, you did this before you moved them to the new PC?

Create your own folder outside of any special folders such as Libraries or My Documents. (leave the Libraries and My Documents folders alone for now)

Folders that you create and name on the C drive (or D or E)  will behave as you are used to on Win XP

Thanks for your input. Yes I had all the files in a DVD disc, the source PC was damaged, so I take the HD to a another machine and save the files to a disc.
When the new PC arrive I just downloading the DVD in the Libraries /Document area.
I will try your suggestion and will inform results. Thanks

I create a new library and new folder, but no success, the files yet are ordered by Alphabetical, and no drag are allow to the files as in the W-XP (I can not agroup the files so).

I though rename the files puting a prefix(1, 2, 3) in the files, it is a second class solution, but may set the files in groups.
Microsoft always do stupid things, but the stupidity is increase.

DVD media is probably not the best choice for file backup.  I'm thinking your problems have more to do with that than Windows 7.

You also have less total characters available for the total folder path and filename.  If you burned to non-rewritable DVD media, the file attribute would be set to Read Only which could prevent you from moving and renaming them.

See if you can select them all, right-click and choose properties and remove the Read Only attribute by unticking the checkbox.  If you still have the original hard drive, why not attach it to the new PC and copy over the folders/files without the DVD intermediary?

I yet had the old HD, but it not work in the new PC, as the chipset is not the same kind, the mother board is new, the old PC is from 2008.
The old HD not work in the W7, no ever in the Security mode.

My problem now is this W7 prevent the custumer to drag any file to other position, all files had a fixed position inside the folder.
Prevent the user from draging the file to a new location inside the folder is really a stupid fail from Microsoft.

The best SO Microsoft already do is the old W-XP-64, this W7 is fully of bugs yet. I am Not Happy With the W-7.
From Microsoft I recommend only the W-XP 64, stay away guys from the W7.

Have you removed the Read Only file attribute from the folder and files?

The attributes ''read only''' and ''Hidden'' are both unmarked, I untouch them.
But the Advanced Attributes ''Folder is ready to archieving'' had a blue square, and the attribute ''Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties'' are marked.

Just test now, the attribute ''Read Only'', marked or no, had no effect on the on the files(drag yet unable).

What do you mean when you say 'I create a Library'?

Windows 7 has everything marked as read only.  For instance, I just looked at a folder I created last night, and the folder is marked read only.

Personally, I think libraries are a good idea, but I don't use them.  For me, they're too hard to set up correctly, and I can't remember how to do it the next time I have to do it.  I just create a "documents" folder that I share on my network instead.

On the W7 one can create ''libraries'', and put folders inside.

I think I understand the problem you are having. I hope the following helps.  It works with all Windows 7 folders (not just Library folders).

Step #1 - Right click on the Library/Folder you want to organize (Alternatively, you can right click in a blank spot (i.e., not on a file/folder) when the Library/Folder is open.)

Step #2 - Click on "Properties"

Step #3 - Select the type(s) of files in the Library/Folder.  This optimizes the folder's view/options, typically used for the file type(s) you have in the folder.  These options can be further customized (see the final picture/description below for more details regarding this).

Step #4 - Right click in an empty space.  On the menu that pops up, you can select how you want your files/folders sorted.  The immediately available sort options will depend on the option you chose in Step #3.

Step #5 - You can also select how you want your files/folders grouped by.  The "Group By" option is set to none by default for all Library/Folder optimized settings (I believe).

Selecting "More..." in either the "Arrange By" or "Group By" menu gives you dozens of additional attributes you can use to organize your files.  Checking the box of the attribute will now make it available to select (in Step #4 or Step #5).  Hopefully you can find the appropriate attribute that will work for how you want to organize your files/folders.

Let us know if you have any additional questions.

PJ:Thanks for for your extensive help, I appreciated it.
I already test some of these ''Show Details'' options in the last week, and it change the exibition of files details only, not the folder structure, and the dragging of files still is impossible;

As the title of the last image you post say, this option will change the file's details display only.
But I already resolv the problem: I rename all the near 3000 files, add an alpha-numeric prefix (1a, 1b, 2a, 2B etc...)to the file names, to set a order and group the files in clusters as brand(Odyssey, Bryston) of type(tube sockets, parts).
It cost me near 20 hours to made it; when the OS had a fail the user suffer for it.
I regret the moment I left the W-XP. :duh:
I very thanks the kindly help from all you boys. :thumb:
