password programs
« on: 1 May 2012, 08:50 pm »
I just downloaded lastpass, and am trying it out.

I wanted a program that would run on my PC and my iphone, and lastpass will, although I need to get the premium version, at $12 a year.

Any comments?
Other suggestions?

It's a secure password manager.  It will create random passwords for you, they seem like the passwords would be basically impossible to crack, its a random combination of upper and lower case letters with numbers thrown in, and special characters if the site allows them.

Then, it remembers the passwords/login information for you, and logs into the sites when you want to go there.

And sorry I didn't search first, usually I do.

So I put some of my accounts/passwords under lastpass.  My only complaint is for some sites, it has some trouble with the auto login, and I have to do a step or two manually.
Still a nice program, and I'm sure these accounts are much more secure than they were yesterday.

Thanks for informing Randy, I unaware this kind of software exist.
I can not see myself using it, I do not trust it for security reasons, looks it made auto logon in sites also.
I had no difficult in made huge passwords.

I can make passwords no problem, remembering them is another thing

Lots of people use them, and I think the random passwords it makes are much more secure than the ones I could create, but I also understand not wanting to use these password programs.

Still, I feel safer, and it is much easier to log into any password protected site now.

The other thing I am realizing tonight is how many accounts I have created at different places on the net, and I haven't hit all of them yet.

I store them in my head. The key is to have a mnemonic system. Although to be honest, I do reuse some, more than I perhaps should...

I know people write down their passwords, but I thought that was also bad, in case someone steals your book, then you're screwed.

I have been going through a bunch of store type of websites, where I had used my less secure password, and now have a unique, very hard to crack password for each store.

EDIT
Wanted to add that I did not mean to critisize how anybody handles their own passwords, its a personal thing, and I don't believe there is a perfect way, just the way that works for you, and is hopefully secure enough.

Also, in the end, I think my wife is the ultimate security feature for my accounts.
She reviews bank and CC statements every month, and makes sure that all charges are correct.  In the end, I think that kind of diligence keeps your money safe.

We use KeePass at work (IT).  I have gotten in the habit of keeping things updated there and have recently starting using it at home too.  Quite handy and free.

I also use KeePass, it has a lot of options and works great. I generate a unique 10 character password for every site and probably have 100's. I use a unique, easy to remember 13 character master password to open KeePass. The KeePass data file along with other important files are automatically backed up each day with the CenturyLink Personal Digital Vault that is included with my DSL service.

The KeePass data file is also included in the backup image made weekly. The entire C Drive is imaged on a second hard drive using TeraByte Image for DOS. I have only had to use the image file to restore a hard drive twice in 10 years but sure was happy to have it. Nothing like being up and running in a couple of hours after a catastrophic failure.
