Noisy static when powering off my Bryston 4B-ST
« on: 1 May 2012, 07:01 am »
When I power off my Bryston 4B-ST I can hear very audible static discharge 'crackling" noise.

Is this something to be concerned about?

Unless its something that is very loud or maybe just recently started happening......from what i understand its 100% normal in Brystons Amps(even their new ones)....used to happen to my 4BSST2 all the time.....capacitors discharging i believe.

my 7B-SSt,4B-sst,and the 28's,NO noise of any sort on power down.
On power up(soft start)I hear the zzzzzzzt sound of  incoming  power(I like that).
I've had the 7 and 4 for quite a few years and not a peep when I shut them down.

HI

As VOLKS was saying above it is a small discharge from the capacitors on shut down and will not cause any problems.  It seems to depend on the ground in the system and the other equipment used as it does not always occur.

If you want we can certainly have a look at it for you to be sure.

My 3B-ST did it.  On power-up a zzzzt and on power down, a clearly audible click that was in the high-mid/low-high freqency range in pitch.  Nothing alarming but a clear noise.

My 3B-ST was serviced under warranty for another issue - ongoing mechanical hum - with a new power supply and capacitors installed.  But after this, I still had the same power up an power down noises - seems normal for ST.

My current SST2 series amp does it to on both on and off but the off click is very silent - less loud definitely than the ST series.

Hope this helps.
