Guess the CHAIN store now selling new albums?
« on: 30 Apr 2012, 01:49 am »
This HAS to be good for our little hobby - rising like the Phoenix from it's own ashes :thumb:

OK, let the guesses begin....it's NOT intuitive, that's the first (possibly of many) clue to where these now can be found.

Canadians, Germans and Brits; you can play, too....it's a US based company, but I just read they have stores in your countries (2nd, perhaps not terribly helpful clue!!)

Hmmm.

I know Best Buy already has them.

Yip - that was good news for our little hobby 2 years ago.

It made sense that Best Buy carried albums with all the CD's and DVD's they sell (sold? I think maybe they no longer sell CD's) there. Records are played on electronic equipment, so the fit was def there with Best Buy.

This chain store was more of a surprise.

BINGO.  How freeky is that?  Ok, well, 7-11 may have been freekier still, but it is Urban Outfitters - a place that caters almost exclusively to an under 30 audience.

It's right next door to our reliable take-out Vietnamese restaurant and I had 10 minutes to kill so I wafted in.  Glad I did...very surprised to see a good selection there.

It's online, too: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/search/search.jsp?searchPhrase=records&listViewSize=&indexStart=0&sortBy=&sortOrder=&categories=&categories2=&categories3=&categories4=&skucolor=&priceLow=&priceHigh=&skusize=&brand=&maxPrice=&minPrice=

Yes, hipsters. My 19 yo daughter and her friends think the little portable LP machine is way cool. I was in a store in Savannah for Record Store Day. It was packed and most in there were under 25 yo's, dressed in, guess what, either the same UO style attire she frequently wears or the dashing Zombie/Twilight styles (black and blood red).

I must be getting old because I had never heard of Urban Outfitters, let alone seen one.

They're based in Philadelphia....but, likely all over the US now (there here in San Fran, for sure)

Anthropologie is it's more grown-up sibling; catering overwhelmingly to women (only) and the fashionista set. My wife has long loved these stores.

Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters tend to be located near one another.  Either to mash out a better rent deal from mall landlord or, perhaps, they come from the same distribution center so it's less costly to re-stock two stores in the same vicinity.

Pretty cool to have them in UA.  Most (many?) of the shoppers had been born well after the reported demise of the LP so it's particularly interesting to see it embraced there  :thumb:

So...I Googled Urban Outfitters as I too have never heard of, or, seen one.  Basically a department store, yes?

We have Fred Meyers here "WA" (more of a variety store) , now owned by Kroger, and a couple of years ago they wandered into the vinyl market but with such trepidation that they never had a selection you pictured at UO.  Was in the "electronics/media" section a couple of days ago and all vinyl has disappeared.  Maybe I should wander into Sears or Kohl's and see if they are trying this market?

BTW, John, where is "UA"?  Upper Antarctica?  Upper Antigua? Ooo, ooo, I know, Upper Afghanistan!  No, that's not it.  Austria, Argentina, Armenia, Algeria, Albania?  Oh heck, I give up.  Where is it?

Anthropologie is another store I have never heard of. Might be due to living in a relatively small (500,000) metro area in eastern Washington and the fact my kids are left the nest a long time ago.

I do agree it is very cool that this store is carrying vinyl. At RSD in Spokane more than 50% of the shoppers were under 30 :thumb:

They're too small to be a dept store - and the audience is definitely skewed to under-30...so it's not a mass store like Freddy's.

There in OR and WA...several locations: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/help/store_locator.jsp

Hot Topix, the mall based young folks clothing retailer, also carries vinyl. Not much stuff  geezers like me would be interested in though. At least it's available to up and coming  audiophools!!!!

UO has a very limited selection of LPs, some new and reissues. I bought the latest Bon Iver there. Convenient to those who need an LP fix, but not close to a record store.

Good to see that the under 30 crowd remains interested in vinyl. They even sell film cameras. I bet that there will be more turntables in dorm rooms in the future.

I live in a fairly rural agri-based area so I also had not heard of UO or Anthropologie but did a quick Google and found they are both in the Seattle & Portland metroplexes.  Still, not a likely store for me to shop in but my sister and niece probably would.

I volunteered at my local record store on RSD and the store had its best day in 21 years. The sales were vinyl and more than 50% of the customers were under 30. :thumb:

CD sales are dropping but the under 30 crowd is willing to spend 18-25 bucks for an LP?  That's surprising. I'm sure its not about sound quality.

Im enjoying the sudden surge in used CDs being sold at my mall based CD/DVD store.

They're more often buying up the used/thrift/dollar bin stuff, not the $25 ones at UO.

Eh, I think it is a mix. That hot new album on LP gets a lot of folks excited. It would be great to know the proportions of new records, record store used records, and thrift/garage sale used records for different types of record buyers.

Yes, that makes sense. When we took my daughter and friend to Chicago for Bon Iver they walked out of the concert with new LP's, not CD's.
