Nagaoka JT-555 dropping right channel
« on: 29 Apr 2012, 09:27 pm »
Hi all,

I have a Nagaoka JT-555 on my main turntable (Thorens TD 160 mkII) that I found at goodwill a few years ago. This combination has worked fine so far, although it's overdue for a good cleaning, beltreplacement etc.

Since a few weeks, the right channel has been intermittent and has now finally completely dropped. I'm wondering if this means replacing the cartridge or is there anything I can still do to fix this?

What I've done so far:
- reseated the stylus
- wiggled the signal leads
- checked the rest of the chain (CD player as signal source).

If I can't get that channel to come back, any recommendations for a replacement cartridge?

Edit: spelling

The next thing to do is to reverse the left and right channel leads on the back of the cartridge. If the problem switches channels, the cartridge is at fault. If the problem stays in the same channel, the problem is elsewhere in your system.

Hi Scottdazzle, thank you for your advice. I tracked the problem down to something very stupid.  :duh: :duh: :duh:

The Philips preamp (part of a black tulip system) I use as a phone pre had some crufty switches. Working them back and forth a few times made everything work again.  :thumb: happy and playing vinyl.

Now I have this working, it's time for proper overhaul.
