Or....find one spot and say piss on it. I basically have found 2 different thicknesses of  records in my collection. I moved my VTA  up .25mm (as I did set my arm for the thin record (what a dumb ass)), and I'm going to call it good.

Why not think automation?   Have a distortion analyzer in a feedback loop with a robotic height/alignment adjuster arm.

Feed a signal from listening position mikes to analyzer, and you don't have to mess with the signal coming off the cart.

Perfect Sound Forever.   :thumb:

Im currently tinkering and setting up a Technics SL1210M5G that I recently acquired from another member here, so this thread has come at a convenient time for me, I am looking into various USB scopes.  Im trying to find one reasonably priced that will get me an image like the one undertow posted but I have come up short.  Ideally,  I would like to get something that has at least 100x optical magnification.  I may have to look for something at 50x tops.

Any suggestions?

Bear,
USB scopes are usually advertised at total magnification.  As a rule of thumb optical is 50% of that.  But it's anyone's guess what an individual scope is.

I suggest you check out Amazon where some reviews might give you a hint of actual performance.  You might need one said to be 400X, to have true 100X optical.  You have to make sure the software is compatible with your operating system.

If you get a higher powered scope, I'd guess around 300X optical, I can tell you how to modify it to check for stylus wear.  I used to use an AT scope for that.  Top mag was 500X.  Some of the microridge tips are so small you can hardly see them at 100X.  Those old Shure scopes were mostly used for spherical or elliptical.
If you get one of those, it would be nice if the lamps can be switched off and the scope still operate.  You need high intensity side lamps to check for wear.
