Need new music!
«

I have been listening to a lot of Diana Krall, Norah Jones and Holly Cole as of late. I find their style very relaxing and easy to listen to, but I'm starting to get burnt out on the same 8 disks or so.
Can anyone recommend anyone new along the same lines?

You might like Jane Monheit. I have a couple of her discs (Come Dream with Me & Never Never Land), and her music is somewhat in the same vein as DK.
If you are thinking mellow female vocalists, you might like Frances Black or Altan, too. Clannad's "Landmarks" album might also be up your alley. Black is Irish, but many of her songs have something of a jazz influence. Altan is normally thought of as a traditional Irish group, but the latter albums have some "world/new age" feel to them, too. The same could be said for Clannad.

Holly Cole's "Temptation" is one of my favorite albums, I like alll the Krall stuff but am less enthused about Norah Jones. I'd second lcrim's suggestion of Cassandra Wilson and add some others:
Johanne Blouin, "Everything Must Change" (hard to find, but worth it??)
This was her first jazz album after recording others in French.

Julia Fordham, "Porcelain" -- a little more English pop than jazz, but ultra-tasty.

Christy Baron, on the Chesky label, "Steppin'"---she covers modern standards (like Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street") rather than doing the classic tunes one more time.

I like Sade a lot. The new Erykah Badu CD is good too. It's not quite as mellow though. India Irie is pretty mellow.

I just picked up a cd called The Soul Sessions by a 16 year old British girl named Josh Stone. She's singing soul music covers, except for Fell in Love with a Girl by the White Stripes (and covers that one pretty well). She certainly has some pipes and you'd never know she was 16 from the sultriness you hear in her voice. If you're a fan of Aretha Franklin it wouldn't be to much of a stretch to become a fan of Josh Stone. If the record execs don't try to turn her into the next teen pop tart, she has a bright future ahead of her.

I second the Sade stuff- I have all her albums. You might also check out semi-folk singer Dar Williams.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll have to get on Amazon this weekend and listen to some samples.
Rosconey, I saw Joe Cocker live last year, he opened up for ??? (forgot who) and he was great! I was blown away about how good he sounded live! Also forget how many good songs he has!

JPQ, that's one I might have to get. I have Micheal Franks "Dragonfly Summer" and really love it, but I haven't heard any of his other stuff.

Try art-folk master Iron & Wine or indie gods Yo La Teng

If you like relaxing music and are ready to get into the indie scene, setting aside female vocalists for a while, I've got two suggestions:
Iron & Wine
Sam Beam, the college-lecturer Floridian folkster, just released a gem of a quiet strumming album called OUR ENDLESS NUMBERED DAYS. Try it, and you will love it. His previous full-length, THE CREEK DRANK THE CRADLE is the best late night mellow record! Check him out for whispery folkish music
Yo La Tengo
SUMMER SUN and AND THEN NOTHING TURNED ITSELF INSIDE OUT are two of the most beautiful records recently released. The former is a bit more cheery and hopefull than the latter - which is an absolute dreamscape. They are remarkable artists, and quiet summer nights are made for the Hoboken trio to whisp you away through your hi-fi.
If you like these two, you may also enjoy Clem Snide, Hayden, Pedro the Lion, Belle and Sebastian, etc. (Oh, yes - I'd encourage you to pick it up at your local independent record shop - an endangered species)
Regards

I just picked up Yo-Yo Ma's 3 "brazillian" discs, obrigado brazil, obrigado brazil live, and soul of the tango, or some junk like that. Avoid obrigado brazil - the studio recording. Badly recorded, badly mastered, a total let down after the live disc, which I purchased first (at least some of it is particularly bad, none of it as good as the live performances.) Now that live recording...it's GREAT. Great recording, great music! The tango disc is more sparse since it's more in the tradition of tango which is originally solo bandoleon most of the time. It also has brazillian samba elements later in the disc, which is quite cool. It's a bit of a departure though. If you want something safe, definitely check out the obrigado brazil live disc. I give it 5 stars, 10/10, A+ etc etc.
