Really?

Yep. I'm talking rear wall, not side walls.

The room is heavily damped, so placing the Maggies just inside 2 feet from the rear provides the right amount of 3D presence (in this room).

Found out today just how power hungry Maggie 1.7's can really be:
I switched in a restored Threshold 400A amp  to drive the Maggies.  They consumed every bit of the 200 watts Class A power afforded to them from the Threshold.  There was a sense of clarity to the sound that had been missing from other amps I have used.  The 400A seemed to power the 1.7's slightly better than even my beloved Pass Labs INT-150.  The meters on the 400A sure get a workout when playing music connected to the Maggies.  With most speakers, they barely register any movement.  Not so with the Maggies,  Both light columns were regularly registering activity.  The Maggies really seemed to like the 400A as a amp source.

I switched in the Conrad/Johnson DIY clone connected to 400A.  That improved the presence markedly.  The Maggies were really singing now.  They were playing LOUD and CLEAN.  I had thought the panel could not handle higher volume levels, but turns out they can with the right amp.  Not sure why the 100 watt Class A could push the Maggies slightly better than the 150 watt AB amp.

You might be singing a different story if you had tried a more powerful tube amp....

I would think they'd take 700+ watts no problem.

Hey guys, I realize I'm late to the discussion, but am currently fixing up a room for a 2 ch system. My question is,will these 1.7s work well in a small room 11x12? Approximately how far out from the back wall? Also, I kind of want to go tubes this time and am considering rouge cronus magmun and prima Luna premium. Thoughts? Any feedback is much appreciated.

11 x 12 might be kind of pushing it and you'll want at least 30" from the back wall.
The SuperDuper MMG/DMW combo might be a better bet?

I just got done doing the shoehorn treatment with their big ones and while it can be done, it's also a bit of a challenge.

Thanx Steve. I'll definitely look into that. It seems a room that small, one has to start looking at bookshelves and a sub.

Steve-  I'm still drawing a bead on some 1.7's tho that is dependent upon getting my Kenwood L07 mono's shipshape.  The L07's are rated at 150W.  I think I read somewhere that they can deliver 400W into a 2 ohm load and 300W into 4.  The other thing of concern to me is that my room is 15X12x8 with the wall behind me 50% open to a foyer.  Considering both these facts, what do you think my chances for high pressure levels of listening and spacious sound recreation in my size room?

Earlier today I got to listen to some KLH 9's.  Listening via my speakers this evening I can hear resonances I didn't know where there.  It's ruined me.  For a box speaker to be that quiet, I think you may have to spend 20x the cost of a pair of 1.7's.

I think you'll be able to blast your eardrums out with 300W into 4 Ohms.
