sound dampening help
« on: 24 Apr 2012, 12:07 pm »
I have bottom ported floorstanders and live in a NYC apartment. My neighbors below me have some noise complaints. I believe they have complaints on base heavy music so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what I can do to minimize this problem. The speakers are spiked on my wood floor.

Anyone have experience/opinions with Auralex SubDudes?
Would a piece of marble/granite with a rubberized bottom help?
Other suggestions?
Thanks

Sound transmission between rooms and the floor below are often via sound vibration in the air rather than the sub directly vibrating the floor. So an iso platform may or may not help. This is easy to test. Play some loud music with a lot of bass, then lift your sub off the floor and ask your neighbor if that helps. I guess you'd need to be on the phone with your neighbor while you do the test. If lifting the sub does help, you want a decoupler, not granite etc.

Firstly I live in the UK where it seems our buildings are constructed differently.

I live in a first floor flat (apartment) and was also concerned that I did not want to upset my neighbours. My floor is a wooden sprung one. I chose some soundproofing material called 'Quietfloor' and installed it as per their instructions, namely firstly filling the gaps between the floorboards with an acoustic sealant. Once installed I put carpet tiles on top.

Quietfloor feels like a springy carpet underlay.

My neighbours below me say they never hear me play my music. Either they are deaf, being polite, or this stuff works!
