1 in 2 out switcher
« on: 24 Apr 2012, 02:26 am »
I'm looking for help building a 1 in 2 out switcher. Basically I want a selector that would allow me to use 1 single ended output and send it to two components (sub-woofer and headphone amp), depending if I was listening to speakers or headphones. Any suggestion on a fairly transparent option? Thanks.

Any reason something like this RCA splitter wouldn't work?

As long as both aren't always left on I don't see the need for a switch.

My original thought was something like a DPDT switch, but I didn't know if that was the best way to approach this.

I don't like the idea of a splitter, as sonics are a major concern.

If sonics are a major concern, I think you will be much better off with a solid metal splitter like the one I linked to, rather than introducing a switch into the system.

Others may chime in here. But I'd be surprised if a solid piece of metal like that splitter can easily/cheaply be improved upon.

Look forward to others' thoughts.

"Sonics" of a simple "Y" connector?  :)

If using a simple splitter I think I would be more concerned if both devices were NOT turned on.  Sometimes equipment presents an "abnormal" load at the input jack when secured.

Short of physically disconnecting one destination and reconnecting to the other when required, a simple DPDT switch is the superior solution.

Cheers,

Dave.
