Possible problem with power switch?
« on: 17 Apr 2012, 03:41 pm »
So I recently bought a used AR 100.2 amp just to try it...I got good price knowing from the original buyer that there is a loud pop when powering the unit on, but otherwise it souds good.
I first thought that maybe he had some electrical issue but the unit does the same at my place, connected directly to wall socket or via Liebert UPS unit.

There is a loud pop in the speakers followed by a second pop that is not as bad...I guess the amp has delayed switch.
In any case... can you help me identify possible problem.
While I am not good at all at with the electrical eng. and so I don't know/understand what is causing the noise, I wouldn't worry to open the unit up and try to replace a switch or whatever maybe causing the problem.

Thanks

Sometimes a pop can occur when switching off if there is not a small cap across the switch but at turn on, probably not the switch. I suggest you get it checked out by someone who has the knowledge and equipment to troubleshoot it.

It should NOT be hard to fix the loud POP if you are a DIYer like me.

It seems to me the loudspeaker delay cirucit is gone. Instead of replacing or fixing the louspeaker delay board, I'd do something very simple:- add a grounding muting switch at the I/P signal path.

Switch off the muting switch AFTER you witch on the power amp. It's that simple.
